Cardinals Upset No. 6 IU Women; Fall to No. 2 IU men

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team upset No. 6-ranked Indiana and the No. 11 Louisville men fell to the No. 2-ranked Hoosiers in dual meet action at the Ralph Wright Natatorium Friday afternoon.

The Louisville women won 170-130 and the Indiana men won 189.50-110.50. The women won both relays and were buoyed by multiple event winners Julia Dennis (relays and 50 free) and Mia Cheatwood (swept the breaststroke events). Tommy Bried won the 200 fly and 400 IM and Filip Kosinski won the 200 back as highlights for the men.
UofL is back in action tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 1) at noon when Cincinnati visits the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Cardinals will honor their senior class in a ceremony beginning at 11:30.Â

UofL made two NCAA A-standards and set a pool record in the very first event of the meet when the women took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Abby Karl (24.91), Caroline Larsen (26.76), Gabi Albiero (22.61) and Julia Dennis (21.02) combined for a 1:35.30. The B-relay team of Camille Murray (24.57), Ella Welch (26.67), Karoline Barrett (22.87) and Lucy Mehraban (21.47) boarded a 1:35.58. The Louisville men's 200 medley relay touched third with a B-standard time of 1:24.19 put up by Dalton Lowe (21.23), Denis Petrashov (23.59), Aiden Musso (20.34), and Guy Brooks (19.03) combined for a 1:24.19. The C-relay team of Filip Kosinski, Grant Gooding, Aidan Paro and Ethan Chauliaguet put up a 1:25.28.

In the 1000 freestyle, Louisville's Leticia Romao rant away with the race, posting a 9:32.33, almost six seconds ahead of the runnerup. Indiana took the top four spots in the men's 1000 freestyle led by Zalan Sarkany's 8:43.28. The top Cardinal finisher was Eli Shoyat, who went 9:13.12.

In the 200 free, IU's Anna Peplowski put up an A-cut with a 1:42.41 and the win. UofL's Daria Golovaty was second with a 1:44.7 and Summer Cardwell was third in 1:45.26. In the men's event, IU's Rafael Miroslaw was into the wall first with a time of 1:32.32 just out-touching UofL's Denis Loktev (1:34.31) and Murilo Sartori was third in 1:34.38, just sneaking by teammate Guy Brooks' 1:34.39.

In the women's backstroke, IU took the top two places with Kacey McKenna turning in the winning time of 52.05. Abby Karl was third for the Ville with a 43.41 and Camille Murray was fourth in 53.46. In the men's 100 backstroke, IU's Owen McDonald stopped the clock at 45.98 for the winning time. Rian Graham of UofL was right in his wake, touching second in 46.22. Filip Kosinski of the Cardinals was fourth with a time of 47.64.

In the 100 breaststroke, Louisville's Mia Cheatwood was the lone swimmer under a minute with a time of 58.96 for a B-Standard. Teammate Ella Welch was second in 1:00.06 and Kim Herkle was fourth in 1:01.32. In the men's event, IU took the top three spots, led by winner Brian Benzing, who went 52.11. Jake Eccleston was the top Louisville finisher with a fourth place time of 53.33.

In the 200 butterfly, UofL's  Tristen Ulett pulled off a win with a time of 1:56.04, almost two seconds ahead of the pack. Teammate Camden Doane was fourth wit ha time of 1:58.68. Tommy Bried pulled out the win in the men's 200 fly, going 1:42.08 after dueling IU's Tomer Frankel down the stretch. Gustavo Saldo was third with a time of 1:43.31 and Aidan Paro touching fourth in 1:44.02.

In the women's 50 free, Julia Dennis was first into the wall with the winning time of 21.61. Lucy Mehraban was third, turning in a 22.30 and Caroline Larsen was fourth in 22.33. Louisville captain Dalton Lowe was second in the men's 50 free with a 19.52 just behind the winning time of 19.24 put up by Matt King. Charlie Crush was third (19.81) and Ethan Chauliaguet was fourth with a time of 19.87.

In the women's 100 freestyle, Anna Peplowski turned in a 47.68 for the win. Gabi Albiero was second with a time of 47.75 and Julia Dennis was fourth, going 48.61. The Hoosiers took the top three spots in the men's event led by Rafael Miroslav's winning time of 42.12. Louisville's Matias Santiso was fourth with a time of 43.24.

In the 200 women's backstroke, IU's Mya DeWitt put up the winning time of 1:53.89. Rye Ulett took third with a tie of 1:55.25. Filip Kosinski won the men's 200 back with a time of 1:40.93 for the Cardinals. Teammate Jackson Millard tied for second with a time of 1:42.90.

Lindsay Gizzi put up the highest mark in the 1-meter board with a score of 314.85. Samm Helmboldt was third, with a sore of 305.10.  Hoosier Quinn Henninger won the 3-meter springboard and then went on to win the 1-meter as well with a mark of 420.45.. Ray Preas was fifth in the 3-meter  with a 373.20 as the top Cardinal and Rayce Winn was fourth in the 1-meter. IU's Lily Witte won the 3-meter board with a mark of 345.00. Samm Helmboldt was second in 331.88 and Gizzi was third (330.75).

In the 200 breaststroke, Mia Cheatwood won her second individual event, posting the winning time of 2:08.07 with teammate Kim Herkle making it a 1-2 sweep with a time of 2:10.39. Fernanda Celidonio was fourth, with a 2:11.71. In the men's 200 breaststroke, IU's Josh Matheny boarded the winning time of 1:53.96. UofL's Jake Eccleston was second with a 1:54.39 and Tommy Bried was fourth, going 1:56.61.

Anna Peplowski boarded her second win with a 4:39.26 in the 500 freestyle. Summer Cardwell touched second, with a time of 4:41.48 and Daria Golovaty was right behind her for third in 4:42.34. In the men's event, IU's Zalan Sarkany won with a time of 4:15.60. UofL's Eli Shoyat was second in 4:22.30 and Gustavo Saldo was third in 4:23.93. Denis Loktev turned in the fourth place time of 4:24.78.

In the 400 IM, Hoosier Reese Tiltmann took top honors with the winning time of 4:11.25. For the Cards, Kim Herkle was second, boarding a time of 4:13.48 and Summer Cardwell was third with a 4:14.22. Tommy Bried picked up another win, this time in the 400 IM with a time of 3:42.65. Jackson Millard was second (3:46.44) and Gregg Enoch completed the Cardinal sweep with a 3:48.62.

Â The Louisville men's A-relay team of Guy Brooks (209.65), Murilo Sartori (43.16), Matias Santiso (42.19) and Dalton Lowe (42.62) put up the second-place time of 2:51.08 for a B-Cut. The event was won by Indiana's A-relay that boarded a 2:47.87.
