No. 10/8 Aquatic Cardinals Sweep Missouri in First Meet of 2025

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The No. 8-ranked Louisville women's swimming and diving team topped Missouri 204-95, and the No. 10 Cardinal men defeated Mizzou 193-107 Friday afternoon in Columbia, Mo.

The Cardinals were buoyed by multiple event winners and strong relay performances. Gabi Albiero won four events (200 Medley Relay, 100 free, 100 fly and 200 Free Relay). Julia Dennis won three events (200 Medley Relay, 50 free, 200 free) as did Guy Brook, who was first into the wall in the 200 Medley Relay, the 50 free and the 100 free as well as Dennis Petrashov, who swept the breast events and was on the winning 200 Medley Relay. Paige Hetrick won both backstroke events and Kim Herkle won both the 200 breast and the 400 IM to help boost the Cards to victory.

The Cardinals are idle until Jan. 25 at 1:00 p.m. when they square off in the Battle of the Bluegrass with in-state rival Kentucky in Lexington.

In the first race of the day, the Louisville women touched first  with a 1:36.15 put up by Abby Karl (24.58), Caroline Larsen (26.93), Gabi Albiero (22.90) and Julia Dennis (21.74). On the men's side the foursome of Dalton Lowe, Denis Petrashov, Aidan Parol and Guy Brooks went 1:24.49 for the win.

In the 1000 free, Summer Cardwell was the top finisher for the Cardinals with a third place time of 10.02.92 with Mizzou's Zoe Schneider posting the win with a 9:50.49. In the men's 1000, Missouri's Jibran Himsieh put up a 9:14.94 for the win, beating out Cardinal Eli Shoyat's runnerup time of 9:16.98.

Fernanda Celidonio won the women's 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.94 with Tristen and Rye Ulett touching third and fourth. The Cardinal men made a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 free, led by Denis Loktev's 1:34.09, followed by Murilo Sartori's 1:35.38 and Matias Santiso's 1:35.64.

Louisville's Paige Hetrick won the 100 back in 52.40 with Abby Karl touching second in 53.62 and Camille Murry was into the wall third in 53.95. Â MU's Grant Bochenski won the men's event with a 45.86, beating out Louisville's Filip Kosinski's 46.33. Dalton Lowe was third (46.64) and Jackson Millard was fourth in 48.15.

Cardinal Mia Cheatwood dueled down the stretch and out-touched Missouri's Lina Bank by .02 of a second, with the winning time of 59.91. Caroline Larsen was third in 1:00.58 and Kim Herkle was fourth with a 1:01.07. Â Denis Petrashov ran away with the men's 100 breast, beating the field by three seconds with a time of 50.87. Fellow Card Jake Eccleston was third in 54.33.

Mizzou's Emily Roden won the 200 fly with a time of 1:57.95 beating UofL's Madie Hall (1:58.83 and third-place finisher Camden Doane's 1:59.91. Tommy Bried turned in  the second place time of 1:43.18 and Gregg Enoch was third in 1:44.08.

In the 50 free, Julia Dennis led a 1-2-3 Cardinal sweep with a 21.97, followed by Lucy Mehraban (22.57) and Ella Welch's 22.61. Guy Brooks was the only men's swimmer under 20 seconds with a 19.55 for the win. Louisville's Charlie Crush was third (20.04) and Rian Graham was fourth in 20.09.

In platform diving, Louisville's Lindsay Gizzi posted the top score of 222.68 for the win. Gizzi was second in the 3-meter board with a 286.20. Â Ray Preas was third in the men's event with a mark of 326.70. Â In 1-meter men's diving, Preas was third with a score of 326.70 for third. Mack Molloy was second in the men's 3-meter diving with a score of 318.53 just ahead of Rayce Winn's 315.23.

Gabi Albiero led the charge in the 100 free, turning in the fastest time in the field with a 47.85, out-touching teammate Julia Dennis, who was second wit ha 48.55. Guy Brooks and Murilo Sartori went 1-2 in the men's 100 free with Brooks boarding a 42.54 and Sartori right behind with a 43.22.

Paige Hetrick got her second win in the backstroke with a 1:53.22 in the 200, beating the field by three seconds. UofL's Filip Kosinski won the men's 200 back wit ha time of 1:41.58 three seconds ahead of the runnerup Jackson Millard's 1:44.32.

In the 200 breast, Kim Herkle and teammate Mia Cheatwood battled it out down the stretch with Herkle going 2:09.42 and Cheatwood boarding a 2:09.82. Denis Petrashov showed his heels to the field with the winning time of 1:53.69, beating teammate Tommy Bried's 1:57.13 and Jake Eccleston's 1:57.63 for the 1-2-3 sweep.

Summer Cardwell put eight seconds between her and the runnerup with a 4:47.10 ahead of teammate Merve Tuncel's 4:55.32 as the Cards took the top two slots. Gustavo Saldo led a 1-2-3-4 sweep of the men's 500 free with the winning time of 4:20.62. Gregg Enoch was second in 4:22.44, Denis Loktev boarded a 4:23.08 and Kayden Lancaster was fourth with a 4:32.89.

In the 100 butterfly, Gabi Albiero put up a 51.62 for the win, just ahead of teammate Ella Welch (52.32) and Tristen Ulett (52.69). Caroline Larsen was fourth (52.82) and Karoline Barrett was fifth in 53.39. Dalton Lowe won the men's 100 fly with a 46.37 holding off a hard-charging Tiger, Jan Zubik, who went 46.84. Aidan Paro was third for the Cards wit ha 47.12 and Rian Graham was fourth with a 47.31.

In the 400 IM, Kim Herkle left the field in her wake with a time of 4:10.30, seven seconds ahead of the runnerup, Zoe Schneider, who went 4:17.88. Louisville's Camden Doane was third (4:19.35) and Rye Ulett was fourth with a 4:20.71. Tommy Bried won the men's 400 IM, putting up a 3:43.93, five seconds ahead of teammate Jackson Millard's 3:48.47.

The Louisville men were out-touched by Missouris 1:18.40, just missing the win with a 1:18.52 put up by Guy Brooks (19.91), Dalton Lowe (19.43), Rian Graham (19.62) and Charlie Crush (19.56)
