Cards win three day Invite
The No. 12/14 University of Louisville men's and women's swimming team recorded victories in each event while notching 15 NCAA B-cuts and on the final day of competition of the UofL Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Ralph Wright Natatorium.
After three days of competition, the No. 12 UofL women won the UofL Invitational with 2,067.50 points followed by Ohio (1,457), Illinois State 91,131), Kenyon College (1,079.50), and Wright State (734). The No. 14 men won with 2,461 points followed by Wright State (1,500) and Kenyon College (1,146).
"I was very pleased overall," said head coach Arthur Albiero. "That was our vision for the meet to give our swimmers and divers opportunities to compete a lot in a championship setting. With the six sessions, the challenge we made to the team to make sure that we swam and took the approach of the championship format. We did not sit around in the mornings. We swam really well in the preliminaries and we made the cuts that we were looking for. I give them a lot of credit. It's like the midterm for us. It is great information for the staff and us to make adjustments for the second half of the season. We saw a lot of good things and learned a lot about our program this weekend."
Louisville kicked off the final session with a sweep in both platform diving events with Andrea Acquista leading the women with a score of 285.55 and Sean Piner lead the men with a score of 314.00. Mady Ingmire took second with a score of 233.00 while freshman Daniel Fecteau took second with a score of 309.30 in his first collegiate platform diving event.
In the 1650 free, Marah Pugh won the event by touching first in 16:37.64. Freshman Emily Moser beat her seed time by 35 seconds with a second place finish in 16:48.91. On the men's side, Jake Schultz led the field with a 15:36.96 first place finish. Nolan Smith finished fourth in 16:09.36 while Nate Bond finished sixth in 16:34.73.
With NCAA B-cut times, Alina Kendzior and Ashley Leclair went 1-2 in the A-Final of the 200 backstroke. Kendzior touched the wall first in 1:58.03 while Leclair was right behind in 1:58.12. Kenzie Buss took fifth with a time of 2:03.90.
Aaron Greene and Nolan Tesone went first and second in the A-Final of the men's 200 backstroke with the two securing NCAA B-cut times. Greene's time of 1:41.50 tied the pool record and edged Tesone's time of 1:41.66. Nick Hasemann went fourth in 1:46.91. Ryan Massey finished fifth in 1:48.06 while freshman Jacob DeMercurio took sixth in 1:49.63.
Led by NCAA B-Cut times, Mallory Comerford and Andrea Kneppers led the field in the A-Final of the 100 freestyle. Comerford took first in 49.08 while Kneppers finished second in 49.41. Alex Sellers finished third in 51.10 while freshman Grace Long touched seventh in 51.89. Maggie Patterson took second in the B-Final of the 100 free with a time of 51.85.
In the A-Final of the 100 freestyle, Trevor Carroll notched an NCAA B-cut time of 43.74 to lead the field. Max Grodecki also recorded a NCAA B-cut time of 44.14 en route to a second place finish. Matyi Kovacs (44.48), Jonathan Zoucha (44.57), Christian Garkani (44.63), Ruben Izarra (45.34), and Abel Aulbach (45.81) rounded out the field in the A-Final.
Louisville went 1-2 in the B-Final with Estefan Albiero taking first in 45.84 while Clayton Helsley touched second in 46.59. Matthias Lindenbauer swam an NCAA B-cut time of 43.51 in the C-Final.
Louisville took the top four spots in the A-Final of the 200 breaststroke with Andrea Cottrell leading the field with a NCAA B-cut finish in 2:08.82 while also setting meet and pool records. Rachael Bradford-Feldman took second with a NCAA B-cut time of 2:13.39. Manuela Sampaio took third in 2:17.03 while Lauren James finished fourth in 2:18.09. Lucy Kramer finished eighth in 2:21.25 while Emily Sarratt finished second in the B-Final in 2:21.98. Caitlin Ahern finished in 2:24.18.
Carlos Claverie set a new pool and meet record with a B-cut time of 1:53.77 in the A-Final of the men's 200 breaststroke. His time was .7 seconds off of the NCAA A-cut time. Brenner Berger and Dexter Thomas both tied for second with a touch on the wall in 2:00.15. Todd Owen took fourth in 2:01.94.
Abbie Houck led the field in the A-Final of the 200 butterfly with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:57.40. Marah Pugh took second in 1:59.91 while Devon Bibault took fourth in 2:02.31. Paige Ezell finished in 2:10.19 while swimming in the B-Final.
Josh Quallen set a new meet record along with a NCAA B-cut finish of 1:46.16 in the A-Final of the 200 butterfly. Freshman Zach Harting took second in 1:48.04 while Jake Schultz touched eighth in 1:55.72.
Louisville won both 400 freestyle relay events to wrap up the final day of competition. The foursome of Andrea Kneppers (49.66), Mallory Comerford (48.74), Alina Kendzior (49.92), and Andrea Cottrell (49.62) touched the wall first in 3:17.94. The foursome of Pedro Coutinho (44.81), Matthias Lindenbauer (43.23), Trevor Carroll (42.78), and Grigory Tarasevich (42.61) notched a NCAA B-cut time and set a new meet record with a first place finish in a time of 2:53.43

Next up for the Cardinals is competition at the US Long Course Nationals in Seattle, Wash., on Dec. 3-5. Louisville's divers will compete in the Diving Open at Ralph Wright Natatorium the same weekend.
