Senior: Harting closed out his final season at Louisville by qualifying for his first individual NCAA A final, finishing sixth in the 200 free with a personal best time of 1:32.24 to earn All-American honors. At NCAAs, Harting also competed on the All-American 200 medley, 400 medley, 400 free and 800 medley relays and holds school records in the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 400 free relay and 800 free relay. At the ACC Championships, he earned a silver medal in the 200 free with a time of 1:33.52 and also added a fifth place finish in the 200 fly (1:42.10) and a 13th place finish in the 500 free (4:18.40). He was also a member of the gold medal winning 800 free and 400 free relays, as well as the silver medal winning 200 and 400 medley relays at ACCs. Harting competed as a member of Team USA at the FINA Short Course World Championships, where he finished fifth overall in the 200 LCM fly in a time of 1:51.57 and took fourth as a member of the 4x200 meter free relay. In the dual meet season, Harting recorded eight first place finishes, highlighted by wins in the 100 and 200 fly in the Cards’ victory over Tennessee. For his efforts in the classroom, Harting was named to the All-ACC Academic Team.
Junior: In his junior season, Harting continued to be a mainstay for the Cardinals in the butterfly events while also adding middle-distance freestyle to his repertoire. He qualified for the Pan Pacific Championships with Team USA after finishing second in the 200-meter fly (1:55.11) at the Phillips 66 National Championships. At the Pan Pacific Championships, he earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter fly (1:55.05), securing his spot on the 2019 World Championships team. At the NCAA Championships, he qualified for finals in both of his individual events, placing 13th in the 200 fly (1:41.81) and 15th in the 200 free (1:33.16). Harting also competed in all five of the Cardinals’ NCAA relays. At the ACC Championships, he scored 70 individual points for the Cardinals and swam the butterfly leg in the gold medal winning 200 medley relay with a 50 fly split of 20.37. Individually, Harting finished fourth in the 200 fly (1:41.54), sixth in the 100 fly (46.03) and won the consolation final of the 500 free in a time of 4:14.92. At the Winter National Championships, he finished in the top-eight in both the 100 and 200 fly. He also put together impressive performances throughout the dual meet season, highlighted by first place finishes in the butterfly events against Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky. For his performances both in the pool and in the classroom, Harting was named to the All-ACC Academic Team.
Sophomore: As a sophomore, Harting was able to qualify for the 2017 World University Games in Tapei, Taiwan as a result of his successful performance at the World Championships Trials. At the World University Games, he qualified for the semifinals in both of his individual events, placing ninth in the 200-meter fly (1:58.04) and 12th in the 100-meter fly (53.23). Harting was also a part of the gold medal winning 4x100-meter free and medley relays. For the Cardinals, he placed 11th in the 200 fly, breaking the school record in a time of 1:41.65. He also swam the 100 fly (46.12) and 500 free (4:16.34), and he was a member of the 400 and 800 free relay squads. At the ACC Championships, Harting scored 77 points, swimming in the championship final in all of his individual events. He took silver in the 200 fly (1:41.95), fifth in the 500 free (4:16.67), and sixth in the 100 fly (46.42). Other highlights from the meet include his anchor leg (1:33.81) of the school-record breaking 800 free relay, which helped the Cardinals win the silver medal. At the World Championship Trials in Indy, Harting placed sixth in both the 100-meter fly (52.52) and 200-meter fly (1:56.65), while also swimming the 50-meter fly and 200-meter free. At the US Open Swimming Championships, he placed fourth in the 200-meter fly and 13th in the 100 meter fly. Other notable swims include a fourth place finish in the 200-meter fly and seventh place finish in the 100-meter fly at the Mesa Arena Pro Swim Series. Harting also played a valuable role for the Cardinals throughout the dual meet season, winning the 200 fly against Xavier, North Carolina, and Missouri.
Freshman: Harting made an immediate impact on the Cardinal squad. At NCAAs, he was a part of the 7th place 800 free relay team (6:15.86), splitting 1:34.38. He also swam in the 500, free, and the 100 and 200 fly. He scored 73 points at the ACC Championships, where he won the B-final of the 500 free in 4:19.75, was fifth in the 400 IM with a 3:47.86, and had a breakout swim in the 200 fly, winning silver with a time of 1:42.95. His silver medal earned him All-ACC honors. At the US Olympic Team Trials, he was seventh in the 200-meter fly with a 1:56.92. At the US Open Championships in August, he won the 200-meter fly in 1:57.65 and was second in the 100-meter fly, going 53.30. At the Arena Pro Series in Indy, he finished ninth in the 100-meter fly (54.38), and 12th in the 200-meter fly (2:00.84)i. At Charlotte, he was third in the 200-meter fly (1:58.68), 17th in the 50-meter fly (24.87) and ninth in the 100-meter fly (54.54). He is a member of the SAAC and was named to the All-ACC Academic squad.
Prep: Zach Harting joins the Cards from Madison, Alabama where he was named the No. 1 recruit out of the State of Alabama, according to collegeswimming.com. He was named to the USA Junior National Team where he qualified in the 200-fly. At the Junior World Championships in Singapore, he finished fifth in the 200-meter fly with a 1:59.42. He is ranked No. 16 in the world for 18-under. In the 100-fly at the USA Nationals, he finished 21st, dropping 1.09 off his prelim time. He represents the Huntsville Swimming Association where he swam for Coach Matt Weber. A 2016 Olympic Trial qualifier in the 200 butterfly, Harting shattered the Southeastern Swimming record held by 2008 Olympian Gil Stoval in the yards format of the event. The 2014 High School State Champion in the 100-yard butterfly, he was invited to the USA Swimming National Select Camp at the USOC Olympic Training Center. He was a member of the NCSA Ireland Team in 2015 where he finished second in both the 100 and 200 fly. He placed in eighth in the 200 fly at the 2014 Summer Junior Nationals and was fourth in the 200 fly at the 2014 Winter Junior Nationals. Harting is also a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and is a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Service Club, and the National English Honor Society. His best SCY times are 1:44.44 in the 200-fly, 1:48.92 in the 200-IM and 3:51.94 in the 400-IM.
