Gorbenko Records No. 3 Fastest 50 Breaststroke Split in History as Cards Tie for Third After Day 1 of NCAAs

Gorbenko's time of 25.44 is behind only three-time Olympic gold medalist Lilly King's 25.36 and 25.38
ATLANTA – University of Louisville swimmer Anastasia Gorbenko recorded the No. 3 fastest 50 breaststroke split in history with a time of 25.44 as the No. 8-ranked Cardinal women stand tied for third place after the first day of competition at the 2026 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
Gorbenko's historical performance along with dominant showings from 200 medley teammates Julie Mishler, Caroline Larsen, and Julia Dennis helped UofL tie for second place with Stanford, clocking a First Team All-American time of 1:32.35, behind only Virginia's winning time of 1:31.67. Mishler started with the backstroke leg, posting a 23.79. Gorbenko followed with the No. 3 fastest 50 breaststroke split of all time at 25.44. Larsen handled the butterfly leg pacing a 22.41, and Dennis anchored the freestyle with a 20.71 split to notch the second-place tie.
Freshman Thilda Hall made her NCAA Championship debut memorable with a seventh-place finish in the 1650 free, earning First Team All-American honors with a 15:51.82.
Leticia Fassina Romao started the morning session for the Cards in 1650 freestyle timed finals, finishing with a 17th place time of 16:08.93. UofL closed out the morning in the 800-freestyle relay timed finals, where Daria Golovaty (1:43.40 split), Gorbenko (1:42.18 split), Summer Cardwell (1:44.75 split), and Xeniya Ignatova (1:46.43 split) posted a 6:56.76 to earn Honorable Mention All-American honors in 10th place.
After three events, Louisville is tied for third place with 59 points, behind only Virginia (100) and Texas (89) while being neck and neck with Stanford (59).
Thursday's events include the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 200 free relay, and one-meter diving. Prelims are set for 10 a.m. ET with finals slated for 6 p.m. ET Live results will be available on the Meet Mobile app and DiveMeets, and the meet will be streamed on ESPN+.
