
Cardinals Make Podium On First Day at ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After the first day of racing at the 2025 ACC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of Louisville men are in fourth place and the women are in sixth.

The meet, which is being held Feb. 18-22 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C., saw the North Carolina women take an early lead wit 187 followed by Virginia (153), Stanford (138), Miami (129), FSU (125) and Louisville (123). Cal (172) leads the men's teams followed by Stanford (153), North Carolina (139) and Louisville (138).

In the first event of the championships, the Louisville women made the podium in the 200 medley relay, winning bronze when Abby Karl (24.26), Caroline Larsen (26.75), Gabi Albiero (22.67) and Julia Dennis (20.87) turned in a 1:34.55 to medal. Stanford's Levenia Sim, Lucy Thomas, Gigi Johnson and Torri Huske clocked a 1:34.05 to win gold.

The Louisville men were fifth in the 200 medley relay as Dalton Lowe (21.07), Denis Petrashov (22.98), Rian Graham (20.19) and Guy Brooks (18.78) combined forces to post a 1:23.02. The Cal Bears won the event with Bjorn Seeliger, Yamato Okadome, Oludare Rose and John Alexy went 1:21.54. Â

The UofL women touched fifth in the 800 free relay with a time of 7.01.66 posted by Daria Golovaty (1:43.98), Summer Cardwell (1:44.98), Paige Hetrick (1:48.37) and Fernanda Celidonio (1:44.33). The Virginia foursome of Gretchen Walsh, Alex Walsh, Aimee Canny and Claire Curzan turned a 6:44.13 in the 800 Free Relay, setting an NCAA, US Open, ACC and UVA record in the event. The time broke the record of 6:45.91 set at the 2017 NCAA Championships by Stanford.

In the men's 800 free relay, UofL was unable to defend its title from a year ago, touching fourth with a 6:11.55. Denis Loktev (1:33.39), Murilo Sartori (1:33.02), Guy Brooks (1:31.45) and Gustavo Saldo (1:33.69) were the foursome on the blocks for the Cards. The race was won by California's 6:06.66, a meet record set by John Alexy, Gabriel Jett, Destin Lasco, and Lucas Henveaux.

In women's 1-meter diving prelims, Lindsay Gizzi was 11th, scoring a 256.80. Samm Helmboldt placed 22nd with a score of 236.15. Freshman Audree Brazeau-Howes was 32nd with a score of 224.95.  In men's 3-meter springboard, Rayce Winn scored 335.15 just missing the final eight cutoff, placing 9th. Mack Molloy was 13th with a mark of 320.90 and Ray Preas was 23rd with a score of 299.60.

The ACC Swimming & Diving Championships resumes tomorrow with the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay, with prelims taking place at 9:30 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET.
