PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - The University of Louisville baseball team captured the weekend series against Villanova with a convincing 10-3 win over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon.
Louisville took a 1-0 lead in the second when Pete Rodriguez's third sacrifice fly of the season plated Justin McClanahan who had reached on an infield single to open the inning.
In the Cardinal third, Boomer Whiting singled sharply to left to extend his career-long hit streak to 13 games, the longest of the season for the Cardinals. Whiting then stole second, his 31st stolen base of the season, surpassing Curtis Watson's single season record of 30 set in 1985.
After a walk to Logan Johnson, Chris Dominguez singled home Whiting for his 18th RBI of the season. McClanahan hit into a would-be double play, but the relay from VU second baseman Tim Poydenis was wild, allowing Johnson to score and sending McClanahan into scoring position.
Isaiah Howes then doubled to right center, scoring McClanahan and giving the Cards a 4-0 advantage.
The Wildcats picked up three of their own in the bottom of the third. Poydenis was hit by a pitch, Joe Cotter poked an 0-2 pitch down the right field line and a bloop single to center by Ryan Arcadia put the Wildcats on the board. A bunt single by Joe Rosati and a pair of RBI groundouts by Derek Shunk and Dan Terpak cut the lead to 4-3 Cards.
The Cardinals recaptured a four-run advantage with a three-spot in the top of the sixth. The rally began with a walk to Rodriguez, and an out later Chris Cates singled to left. A walk to Whiting loaded the bases, and an RBI groundout by Johnson plated Rodriguez before Daniel Burton's two-run single up the middle made it 7-3 Cards.
Whiting singled, Johnson doubled and Dominguez walked to load the bases in the eighth. An RBI fielder's choice by Chris Pelaez scored Whiting and Howes' RBI single plated Johnson for a 9-3 U of L lead.
Whiting reached on a fielder's choice in the ninth, stole second, moved to third on a second fielder's choice by Burton and stole home on the front end of a double steal to make it 10-3.
Freshman starter Tyler Mathis (3-0) equalled career-highs with his 6.0 innings and seven strikeouts. He allowed the three runs on five singles and a walk to earn the win.
Gavin Logsdon entered in the seventh and put down the side in order, striking out two.
Senior Trystan Magnuson came on in the eighth and struck out two in two innings, allowing one hit. He has now tossed 19.1 innings without giving up a run to begin the season.
Villanova starter Josh Eidell (1-1) took the loss, surrendering seven run, five of which were earned on nine hits and five walks in six innings. Three Wildcat relievers each tossed an inning of relief.
Whiting was 2 for 5 with three stolen bases, giving him 33 on the season, and scored four runs. Johnson equalled the school record and a personal best for walks in a game as he was issued four on the day. He also doubled, scored a run and drove in a run. Howes added three hits, and Burton had two steals as the Cards stole a season high seven bases.
Louisville heads to Murray, Kentucky for a Wednesday match-up with the Thoroughbreds at 3:00 p.m. ET before they open the home portion of the BIG EAST schedule with a three-game weekend series against West Virginia. The first game will take place on Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET and admission is free.
