2009: Returned from arm surgery to make 14 appearances for the Cards, including two starts. Finished 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 30.0 innings. Allowed two runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of relief against Vanderbilt on May 31 in NCAA Regional. Had his best performance since returning from elbow surgery with 5.0 innings of two-hit, shutout relief with six strikeouts to earn the win in the Cards' second round win over Notre Dame at the BIG EAST Tournament. Gave the Cards' 1.0 perfect inning of relief with a strikeout in 12-1 win over USF on May 15. Pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless relief and allowed only a hit at Villanova on May 2. Allowed three runs on just two hits with five strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief against Notre Dame on April 26. Had his best outing of the season with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief while allowing only two hits on April 7 against Indiana. Pitched one inning of scoreless relief on March 22 against Georgetown. Gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in 2.0 innings against Iowa on March 15. Allowed one hit and one run in less than an inning of relief against UT on March 11. Had his longest outing of the season going 5.0 innings at EKU on March 3 as he took the loss giving up three earned runs on five hits and matching a career high with seven strikeouts. Pitched one perfect inning of relief with a strikeout on Feb. 27 against Bowling Green. Returned to the field on Feb. 21 at Florida pitching 2.1 innings in his first appearance on the mound since the 2007 season. He gave up two earned runs on two hits in his return from arm surgery during the 2007 season. Named to AD Honor Roll and a BIG EAST Academic All-Star.
2008: Sat out the entire season with a medical redshirt while recovering from arm surgery.
2007: Forced to end his season prematurely when he had his right arm surgically repaired. Prior to the injury he compiled a 3-0 record with a 3.60 ERA in seven starts, fanning 26 in 35.0 innings. Matched career-bests with seven strikeouts in six innings, moving his record to 3-0 with win at Villanova on March 25. Improved to 2-0 on the season with six strong innings, giving up a run on just three hits against Xavier on March 18. Didn't figure into the decision despite tossing a career-best 6.0 innings and fanning seven against Kent on March 11, allowing just two runs. Notched his first career win with five solid innings at Stetson on Feb. 24. Stepped into the weekend rotation, starting at Southern Miss on Feb. 17 n his collegiate debut and logging a quality start, pitching 5.2 innings, limiting the opponent to one earned run on four hits and a pair of walks, while striking out two.
High School: Earned four letters for the Chargers and was named First Team All-State by the Tennessee Baseball Report his junior and senior seasons, following second team honors as a sophomore. Was All-District and All-Region three years. Went 38-4 during his four seasons of prep baseball at Covington High School, with the win total placing him in a tie for second in state history. During his senior campaign he compiled a 12-2 record, to go with a 0.85 ERA and 117 strikeouts in 99.1 IP, compiling three shutouts. He also hit .441 with 33 RBI for the AA Tennessee State Champions, pitching his team to the 9-1 win with a complete game effort in the title game. As a junior, he was 11-1 with 97 K's and a 1.08 ERA, nearly identical to his 11-1 record, 96 strikeouts and 1.04 ERA as a sophomore. He was the TACA Player of the Year as a junior and Leader Elite Baseball Player of the Year his senior season. Lettered three times and was an All-District selection as a center and long snapper on the football team.
Personal: Born 4/28/88 in Memphis. Parents are Jeff and Sherrie Yarbro and Dale Mathis. Is the oldest of three children. Is majoring in exercise science and in addition to pro baseball, he would like to be a firefighter. Finds the #13 to be lucky. His dad is his biggest influence on his athletic career. Winning the state baseball title was his biggest thrill in sports until the Cardinals made the 2007 trip to Omaha. His hobbies and interests include church, hunting, fishing and golf. His favorite movie is Stepbrothers and he likes to watch Sons of Anarchy on TV. Peyton Manning is his favorite athlete. Grilled chicken and ribs are his favorite foods, Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch is his favorite cereal and Milky Way is his top candy bar. Also likes Ruby Tuesday and Qdoba. The Atlanta Braves and the Indianapolis Colts are his favorite teams. Listens to country music. His favorite quote is "Never let a win get to your head, or a loss to your heart." His dream dinner table would include Jesus Christ (wouldn't be here without Him), Nolan Ryan (to get some pitching tips) and Phil Robertson (The Duck Commander). One of the craziest things he's done is having a mullet with racing stripes during Easter of his sophomore year.
