Cardinals Lose Opening Game to Virginia
May 14, 2026 | Baseball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team took an 8-3 loss in the opening game of the series against Virginia on Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (28-26) had three costly errors on the night that dug too deep of a hole to overcome.
Virginia (35-18) took advantage of defensive miscues from the Cardinals early, turning a pair of Louisville errors into three runs in the second and third innings. Another Louisville error led to a seventh run in the sixth.
The Cardinals wouldn't find the scoreboard until their half of the sixth when Ben Slanker singled with a bases loaded to score Jimmy Nugent.
Louisville would plate two runs in the eighth with an RBI knock from Alex Alicea and a groundball from Zion Rose that plated Slanker.
It would be too little, too late though, as the Cards went quietly in the ninth.
Bayram Hot and Alicea each had two hits in the loss.
Ethan Eberle (3-4) took the loss with six runs allowed over 2.0 innings, although all six runs were unearned. TJ Schlageter and Kian Vorster had scoreless outings, while Joe Olson allowed just a single run over a career-best 3.1 innings.
Louisville and Virginia meet again on Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
