Cards Roll to Eight-Inning Win Over Virginia
May 15, 2026 | Baseball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team got off to a hot start and cruised to a 12-2 victory over Virginia in eight innings on Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (29-26, 12-17 ACC) plated three runs in each of the first three innings in the win.
The Cardinals needed just two batters to plate the game's first run. Zion Rose singled and stole second before a double from Griffin Crain made it 1-0 Cards. Bayram Hot traded places with Crain for the second run and Ben Slanker singled to right to score Hot to give the Cardinals a 3-0 edge after one.
Alex Alicea and Rose started the second with consecutive singles before a wild pitch allowed Alicea to touch the plate. Rose then scored on a Crain sacrifice fly. A Virginia error kept the inning alive later in the frame and Slanker made it hurt with a run-scoring triple into the right field corner.
The scoring continued in the third with Rose driving home Collin Mowry with a groundout before back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Crain and Tague Davis stretched the lead to nine. The RBI was the 94th of the season for Davis, adding to his nation-leading total.
Colton Hartman (4-2) was the beneficiary of all the offense on Friday. The junior tossed five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out three to earn the victory.
Virginia (35-19, 14-15) broke up the scoreless effort with a two-out solo homer in the sixth. The Cards answered right back though. Kade Elam led off the bottom half with a double and Lucas Moore laced a single to right to bring him home.
Louisville wrapped up the night with a pair of runs in the eighth. Alicea and Rose once again had consecutive singles, each driving in a run and the latter of which ended the contest.
All nine Louisville starters had at least one hit in the win led by three from Alciea and Rose. Crain drove in three as part of a 2-for-3 night.
Louisville and Virginia wrap up the regular season on Saturday. First pitch has been moved up to 12:30 p.m. ET.
