
No. 9/12 Cardinals Extend Lead After Dominant Second Day at Purdue

Louisville wins 12 of 14 races, including four event sweeps.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 9/12 University of Louisville men's and women's swim team won 12 of 14 events during day two finals of the Purdue Invitational at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

After the second day of competition, the Cardinal women extend their lead in the team standings with 727.5 points ahead of Florida International (402.5). The men also remain in first with a score of 615 ahead of Purdue (355).

Louisville got off to a fast start as the women's 200 medley relay team of Ashlyn Schoof (24.92), Mariia Astashkina (27.69), Grace Oglesby (23.11), and Casey Fanz (21.72) won in 1:37.44, nearly two seconds ahead of runner-up Purdue.

The Cardinals kept rolling as they took the top four spots in the women's 400 individual medley. Maria Sumida led from start to finish to win in 4:12.88, followed by Sophie Cattermole (4:13.83), Abby Hay (4:15.25), and Carley Lowe (4:16.41). Maggie Jahns took eighth in 4:19.83.

Daniel Sos maintained his lead throughout the men's 400 individual medley, posting a five-second victory in 3:45.17. Jarrett Jones (3:54.33) raced to fifth and T.C. Smith (3:56.86) rounded out the top eight as Hayden Curley (3:55.02) claimed the B-final.

Nastja Govejsek flew to the top spot in the women's 100 butterfly, clocking in at 52.99 for another Cardinals sweep. Alena Kraus (53.38) and Christiana Regenauer (53.65) finished second and third, respectively.

Nicolas Albiero used a stellar back half to win the men's 100 butterfly in 46.72, besting the field by over half a second. Mitchell Whyte finished fifth in 47.69 as Greyson Alarcon took eighth in 48.05.

After breaking away from the field in the second half, Arina Openysheva stopped the clock in 1:45.31 for a win in the women's 200 freestyle. Fourth place went to Diana Dunn (1:48.46) and Katie Schorr (1:51.38) completed the championship heat as Fanz won the B-final in 1:48.91.

Louisville claimed the top four spots in the men's 200 freestyle with Bartosz Piszczorwicz leading the charge in 1:35.17. Colton Paulson (1:35.30), Michael Eastman (1:36.47), and Sam Steele (1:36.91) followed as Kyle Worrell (1:38.05) took second in the B-final.

It was another Cardinal sweep in the women's 100 breaststroke as Astashkina led the charge in 1:00.26. Morgan Friesen (1:00.40) took a close second while Kaylee Wheeler (1:00.93) was close behind in third. Avery Braunecker finished seventh in 1:01.87.

Evgenii Somov's 52.34 was fast enough for second in the men's 100 breaststroke behind Trent Pellini of Purdue's nation-leading 51.81. Sasha Palazzo (54.16) and Aaron Parrott (54.54) took sixth and seventh, respectively, as Griffin Manning (55.06) finished second in the bonus final.

The Cards delivered a 1-2 punch in the women's 100 backstroke as Ashlyn Schoof secured the win in 53.45 followed closely by Lainey Visscher in 53.64. Kyla Alexander finished fourth in 54.26 while Sofie Underdahl (54.83) took sixth.

Whyte powered home to a win in the men's 100 backstroke with a time of 46.30, just ahead of Albiero who took second in 46.71. Nikkos Sofianidis (47.99), Jack Wever (48.69), and Chase Sellers (49.18) finished fourth, fifth, and sixth.

Cattermole (1:46.51), Dunn (1:48.04), Kraus (1:46.66), and Openysheva (1:45.87) combined in 7:07.08 for a convincing 13-second victory in the women's 800 freestyle relay. The men's relay squad of Jones (1:37.11), Piszczorwicz (1:35.87), Paulson (1:34.99), and Eastman (1:37.41) concluded the night with a win in the 800 freestyle relay in 6:25.38, six seconds ahead of ACC rival Pitt (6:31.53).
