
No. 9/12 Cardinals Conclude Successful Weekend at Purdue

Louisville wins nine events during final night in West Lafayette.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 9/12 University of Louisville men's and women's swim team wrapped up a strong showing at the Purdue Invitational, winning nine of 12 events during the final night at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

After three days of competition, the Cardinal women secured the team win with 1088.5 points ahead of Florida International (612.5). The men also finished first with a score of 967 ahead of Purdue (625).

Breaking away from the field early on, Maddie Luther used consistent splits to win the women's 1650 freestyle by seven seconds in 16:27.04. Maria Sumida (16:46.26) finished fourth and Maggie Jahns (16:53.16) placed sixth.

Hayden Curley posted a convincing victory in the men's 1650 freestyle, winning the event by 13 seconds in a nation-leading 14:52.19. T.C. Smith raced to second in 14:52.19 while Ilia Sibirtsev made it a Cardinal sweep in 15:10.53.

Ashlyn Schoof made it three-for-three for Louisville, hanging on for a win in the women's 200 backstroke with a time of 1:56.03 to edge out Pitt's Valerie Daigneault (1:56.11). Sofie Underdahl (1:56.79) finished third while Kyla Alexander (1:58.47) won the B-final.

It was a tight race in the men's 200 backstroke as Purdue's Michael Juengel (1:43.75) edged out Mitchell Whyte (1:43.87). Daniel Sos (1:45.82) and Nikkos Sofianidis (1:46.31) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, as Jack Wever (1:49.31) rounded out the top eight and Greyson Alarcon (1:46.66) won the consolation final.

Casey Fanz sprinted to first in the women's 100 freestyle, stopping the clock in 48.92 ahead of Arina Openysheva who took second in 49.13. Christiana Regenauer (49.57), Nastja Govejsek (50.08), and Lainey Visscher (50.65) completed the championship heat while Avery Braunecker (50.67) claimed the B-final.

Michael Eastman clocked in at 43.68 to finish third in the men's 100 freestyle behind Pitt's Blaise Vera ( 42.84) and Grand Canyon's Mazen Shoukry (43.41). Bartosz Piszczorowicz finished fifth in 43.86 while a 44.24 was fast enough for the B-final win for Haridi Sameh.

Mariia Astashkina held on to her top seed from prelims, winning the women's 200 breaststroke by nearly two seconds in 2:09.55 ahead of Morgan Friesen's 2:11.39. Diana Dunn (2:14.49) raced to fourth and Kaylee Wheeler (2:16.31) took seventh.

Evgenii Somov secured the runner-up position in the men's 200 breaststroke, getting his hands to the wall in 1:56.77 behind Purdue's Trent Pellini (1:55.30). Daniel Sos took fourth in 1:58.19 while Aaron Parrott finished sixth in 1:59.17.
