About the Cardinals
The Cardinals handily won the Purdue Invitational in November, winning a total of 28 events including all but two relays. Four UofL divers earned NCAA Zone cuts at the NC State/GAC Invitational where Molly Fears won the 1-meter board, and 24 Cardinals wrapped up 2019 by competing at the Toyota U.S. Open in Atlanta, Ga.
Â
Grace Oglesby won both butterfly events as the Cardinals fell to No. 4/18 Indiana and No. 2/8 Texas in a two-day tri-meet. Sophie Cattermole set a new pool record in the 1650 freestyle with the fastest time in the nation so far this season and Daniel Pinto broke the program record on the 3-meter board in the Cardinals' sweep of No. 18/23 Notre Dame on Nov. 1. Louisville had another top-25 matchup on Oct. 24, winning 15 events despite falling to No. 10/3 Tennessee.
Â
History was made last season for the Cardinals as they became the first ACC program in history to have both its men's and women's teams finish among the top-five in the team standings at the NCAA Championships in the same year. The women's team recorded their highest finish in program history with a fourth-place showing at NCAAs while the men's team finished a program-high fifth place. The Cardinal men were the team runners-up at the ACC Championships and the women secured third place.
Â
Scouting Northwestern
The Wildcat men enter 2020 with a 3-2 dual meet record and a convincing win at the TYR Invitational. Andrew Zhang has consistently been Northwestern's top sprinter and relay contributor while Manuel Martos Bacarizo has picked up a pair of NCAA 'B' cuts in both backstroke events. Federico Burdisso sits at the top of their lineup in both butterfly events and won the 200 fly against Arizona State.
Â
The 25th-ranked Northwestern women arrive in Louisville with an undefeated dual meet record, including big wins over No. 21 Arizona State and No. 22 Arizona. Like the men, the women also won the TYR Invitational behind school-record setting performances from Hannah Brunzell in the 100 breast and Calypso Sheridan in the 50 free. At the SMU Classic, Sheridan won the 400 individual medley with a time that currently ranks fifth in the country.
