Senior: Albiero’s senior season was one for the record books. He became just the third Cardinal on the men’s team to ever win an NCAA Championship title after earning gold in the 200 butterfly. His time of 1:38.64 lowered his own program UofL record and remains the fifth-fastest performance in all-time history. Albiero also finished second in the 100 butterfly (44.32) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (44.86) at the NCAA Championships. His time of 44.32 in the 100 butterfly broke his own UofL record and tied the ACC mark, all while moving up to the No. 6 time in U.S. history. Albiero was also part of four Cardinal relays at NCAAs, including splitting 20.07 on the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay that clinched UofL’s first-ever NCAA relay title. He led-off the eighth-place 800 freestyle relay in 1:32.31, split 44.09 on the butterfly leg of the fourth-place 400 medley relay, and earned bronze in the 400 freestyle relay with a 42.09 split. Albiero played a crucial role in helping Louisville earn their first-ever ACC title in program history. At the ACC Championships, he won his fourth-straight 200 butterfly title (1:39.08) and collected silver in the 100 butterfly (44.67) and 100 backstroke (44.85). He split 44.81 on the butterfly leg of the gold-medal 400 medley relay, split 19.06 on the winning 200 freestyle relay, split 41.71 on the runner-up 400 freestyle relay, and led-off the third-place 800 freestyle relay in 1:32.31. Albiero won all six events he raced during the abbreviated dual meet season, and he was named ACC Swimmer of the Week on January 12, January 26, and February 2 following all meets he competed in. For his efforts in the classroom, Albiero was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the fourth-consecutive season and was once again named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Following his record-breaking season, Albiero was also awarded ACC Swimmer of the Year.
Junior: After a record-breaking sophomore season, Albiero was back for more during his junior campaign. At the ACC Championships, he successfully defended his 200 butterfly (1:38.65) title for the third-straight year, moving to No. 4 all-time in history while also setting a new ACC meet and pool record. He won the 100 butterfly (44.86) after setting the pool record at 44.83 during prelims and finished third in the 100 backstroke (44.75). Albiero led off the winning 800 freestyle relay in 1:32.45, was the leadoff on the 400 freestyle relay in 44.36 that finished second, and split a 44.55 on the butterfly leg of the 400 medley relay that broke the ACC meet and pool record. Before the meet was cancelled, Albiero qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and 200 butterfly. He won both butterfly events at the Purdue Invitational before going on to place 21st in the 100-meter backstroke (55.39) and 22nd in the 100-meter butterfly (54.19) at the Toyota U.S. Open. Albiero, who is a member of the USA Swimming National Team for 2019-20, won 10 events throughout the dual meet season which was highlighted by a triple-event victory against Notre Dame. After his stellar 200 butterfly performance at the ACC Championships, he was honored for best Record-Breaking Performance at the 2020 Louie Awards. For his performances in both the pool and in the classroom, Albiero was awarded ACC Honor Roll, CSCAA Scholar All-America, CoSIDA Academic All-America DI Men's At-Large, and CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Men's At-Large honors. He was also the 2020 All-ACC Academic Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named to the CSCAA All-American team in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 400 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay, and 800 freestyle relay. He was the ACC Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 14.
Freshman: Albiero made an immediate impact for the Cardinals in his debut season, earning ACC Freshman of the Year honors for his performance throughout the year. At the NCAA Championships, he placed sixth in the 100 back (45.16), while also taking ninth in the 200 fly and breaking his own National Age Group and school records with a time of 1:40.85. Albiero was also a member of all five Louisville relays at the NCAA Championships, highlighted by the seventh place showings in the 800 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. At the ACC Championships, he earned medals in each of his individual events, winning gold in the 200 fly (1:41.08), silver in the 100 back (45.44) and bronze in the 100 fly (45.60). His school record-breaking backstroke split of 20.95 in the 200 medley relay also helped the Cardinals to a gold medal finish. Albiero had an impressive showing at the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships, placing 10th in the 200-meter fly (1:56.76) and 11th in the 100-meter back (54.45). At the Winter National Championships, he posted top-eight finishes in the 100 fly (47.19), 100 back (47.36) and 200 back (1:43.57). In the dual meet season, Albiero earned individual event wins in at least one event at each of the Cards’ dual meets. For his performances both in the pool and in the classroom, Albiero was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American and to the All-ACC Academic Team.
Prep: A native of Louisville, Albiero joins the Cardinals as a fly and back specialist. Internationally, he was a member of the 2017 USA World Junior Team, where he earned a silver medal on the Mixed 4x100 medley relay. For Cardinal Aquatics under coach Chris Lindauer, he became the 18 and under champion in the 100-meter fly at World Championship Trials. Albiero is also a four-time silver medalist and two-time bronze medalist at the Winter Junior Nationals. Additionally, he competed in the 2016 Olympic Trials. For the Christian Academy of Louisville, Albiero was a six-time state champion, as well as a two-time Male Swimmer of the Year. He also holds Kentucky state records in the 100 fly and 100 back. He holds best times of 46.29 in the 100 fly, 1:43.53 in the 200 fly, 47.23 in the 100 back, 1:45.15 in the 200 back, and 1:45.63 in the 200 IM. Academically, Albiero was a member of the National Honor Society.
