Swimming Is Off the Blocks Fast in First Day at Arena Pro Series

Kelsi Worrell wins the 100-meter fly in record time
The University of Louisville Cardinals swimming team tore out to a hot start off the blocks in the first day of competition Thursday night at the Arena Pro Series in Minneapolis.

The Cards' night was highlighted by a record setting performance by Kelsi Worrell in the 100-fly.  As the only woman under 58 seconds Worrell won the 100-meter butterfly beating Dana Vollmer (58.07) and Noemie Thomas (58.23). Worrell clinched the title with a time of 57.91, breaking her preliminary record of 58.03.  That swim, in turn, downed the long-standing pool record of 58.15 set by Jenny Thompson way back in 1999. Worrell's time fell just half-a-second shy of her third-ranked 57.24 from the Pan American Games this summer.  Only Sarah Sjostrom (55.64) and Jeanette Ottesen (57.04) have been faster this year.

In the women's 200-freestyle, Andrea Kneppers and Mallory Comerford both dropped time from morning for 14th and 16th place going 2:00.52 and 2:00.81 respectively.

In the men's event, Cardinal alum Joao DeLucca claims third in 200 free with a 1:49.06, behind Olympians Conor Dwyer (1:47.88) and Ryan Lochte (1:48.66).  Trevor Carroll  was sixth in 1:50.26 and Matthias Lindenbauer was seventh in 1:50.35. Ruben Izarra was just off his morning time finished 8th in C-final with a 1:53.55 as one of 6 Cardinals in this event tonight. Grigory Tarasevich wins the 200 freestyle D-final in 1:51.77. Jonathan Zoucha finished sixth with a 1:54.22.

Andrea Cottrell was third in the women's 100-meter breaststroke, with a 1:08.14. Freshman Manuela Sampaio finishes 32nd with a 1:14.75. For the men, Carlos Claverie finished third, boarding a 1:01.19. Cardinal Alum and All-American Thomas Dahlia finished 12th, Â dropping time from his prelim with a 1:02.55 ahead of Dexter Thomas in the C-final, who finished 23rd overall with a 1:05.08. Todd Owen (1:05.88) Â and Brennen Berger (1:05.89) finish .01 apart in 100 breaststroke D-final for 31st and 32nd.

 Also in the women's 100-meter butterfly, Mallory Comerford finished 7th in C-final of 100 butterfly (1:01.86), Hannah Magnuson won the D-final in 1:01.08.

For the men, Pedro Coutinho dropped time and moved up to 4th place in B-final, 12th overall with a time of 54.36, dropping .33 from his prelim time in the 100-meter butterfly. Josh Quallen finishes 3rd, David Boland 5th in C-final in the same event and were 19th and 21st overall .

In the 400-meter individual medley, Cardinal alumnae Tanya Kylliainen drops almost 4 seconds from prelims to take 4th place in B-final with a 4:47.79. Mariah Pugh drops time from morning in 400 IM to move up to 5th place in C-final, 21st overall with a time of 4:58.33.

For the men, Nolan Tesone dropped .06 from his prelim swim for fifth place and a time of 4:28.26. Ryan Massey drops .47 for 4:29.76 in 400 IM, good for fifth place in the B-final! Jake Schultz finishes 7th in 400 IM C-final, 23rd overall with a time of 4:35.96.
