
Cardinals Win Three Medals and Jump in the Standings After Day 2 at ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams won gold and two silvers on Day 2 at the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The women moved into second place with 473.5 points, trailing only Virginia's 552. NC State is third with 418 followed by Duke (332), UNC (328), Notre Dame (274), Virginia Tech (253.5), FSU (217), Pitt (183), Georgia Tech (177), and Miami (162). The Louisville men moved up four spots in the standings with 302 points after two days of racing. The Cardinals trail only NC State (531.5) and Notre Dame (335.5). UofL is followed by Virginia Tech (298.5), Florida State (292), Virginia (249.5), Georgia Tech (235), North Carolina (223), Pitt (193), Duke (130) and Miami (54). Â

The Cardinals put up the second fastest time in UofL history with a 1:25.39 to win silver in the 200 free relay. Gabi Albiero swam the leadoff leg in 21.81, Christiana Regenauer was next in the water with a split of 21.05. Julia Dennis put up a 21.07 and Ella Welch anchored in 21.46 to make the podium. The race was won by the Virginia Cavaliers, who put up a 1:23.63 to set an NCAA record.

In the men's 200 free relay touched seventh with a time of 1:16.96 turned in by Dalton Lowe, Charlie Crush, Vlad Dubinin and Guy Brooks. NC State set an American record with a winning time of 1:14.44.

In the B-final of the 500 freestyle, Summer Cardwell was into the wall third, posting a time of 4:46.32 and Madison Luther, who dropped 2.37 seconds off her prelim time, was fourth with a 4:46.94. Virginia's Cavan Gormsen took gold with a time of 4:38.43. In the C-final, Rye Ulett touched fourth with time of 4:48.97 and Paige Kuwata was seventh with a time of 4:50.96. Cavan Gormsen won gold for UVA with a time of 4:38.43.

Ilia Sibirtsev, who swam a lifetime best in prelims, won the 500 free for the first men's gold of the championship for the Cardinals. The graduate student stalked the leaders, sitting in fourth for the majority of the race, making his final move with 10 yards left to take gold in 4:14.41. Murilo Sartori, who swam his personal best in the prelims, was also in the A-final and touched eight in 4:18.66. In the B-final, Tyler Watson touched second with a time of 4:17.14 just ahead of teammate Denis Loktev, who went 4:19.18. Gustavo Saldo clocked in at 4:20.52 for fifth.

In the women's 200 IM, Fernanda Celidonio touched fifth with a time of 1:56.46. Kim Herkle was seventh, turning in a 1:57.74. Tristen Ulett won the C-final with a time of 1:57.43 and Mady Hall was eighth in 1:59.82. Virginia's Alex Walsh won the A-final with a time of 1:51.76.

In the 200 IM B-final, Jackson Millard finished third with a time of 1:46.85. In the C-final, Luke Shourds was into the wall seventh, to post a time of 1:46.85. NC State's Arsenio Bustos won gold after swimming a 1:40.75.

Christiana Regenauer touched fourth in the 50 freestyle as the top Cardinal. Julia Dennis was fifth with a time of 21.74 and Gabi Albiero was sixth, going 21.77. In the B-final, Ella Welch touched fourth in 22.38 and Lucy Mehraban was sixth in 22.52. Karoline Barrett won the C-final with a time of 22.15. Gretchen Walsh set a meet, conference and American record with a time of 20.57.

In the men's 50 free, Dalton Lowe was third in the B-final, putting up a 19.36. In the C-final Vlad Dubinin was fifth with a 19.69 just ahead of teammate Charlie Crush, who clocked in at 19.74. Notre Dame's Chris Guiliano took gold with a time of 18.70.

In 1-M women's springboard, Else Praasterink qualified for the finals with a fourth in the prelims and went on to win silver in the finals with a score of 306.80. Lindsay Gizzi was 12th with a 251.35 and Grace Leonard was 15th with a score of 245.05 to both score for the Cardinals.
Competition resumes Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. for preliminaries with finals at 5:30 ET.Â
