Cardinals Head to Atlanta for U.S. Open Championships

Louisville will send 24 swimmers to compete in the four-day meet.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Twenty-four members of the University of Louisville men's and women's swim team will compete at the U.S. Open Championships on Dec. 4-7 at the McCauley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.

Prelims will begin each day at 10 a.m. with finals starting at 7 p.m. In preparation for the upcoming Olympic year, the meet will be swum in long course meters and will feature some of the sport's biggest U.S. names as well as star international swimmers.

ABOUT THE CARDINALS
Nicolas Albiero, Hayden Curley, Mihalis Deliyiannis, Jarrett Jones, Haridi Sameh Kamel, Bartosz Piszczorowicz, Ilia Sibirtsev, T.C. Smith, Nikolaos Sofianidis, Evgenii Somov, and Daniel Sos will represent the Cardinals on the men's side. Sibirtsev is currently seeded second in the 800m freestyle and Sofianidis ranks 14th in the 100m backstroke right behind Albiero, who is also seeded sixth in the 200m butterfly.

Louisville women competing include Mariia Astashkina, Diana Dunn, Casey Fanz, Morgan Friesen, Nastja Govejsek, Abby Hay, Alena Kraus, Grace Oglesby, Arina Openysheva, Christiana Regenauer, Maria Sumida, Lainey Visscher, and Kaylee Wheeler. Oglesby is the 16th seed in the 100m butterfly.

Former Louisville standouts Marcelo Acosta, Carlos Claverie, Mallory Comerford, Kelsi Worrell Dahlia, and Zach Harting will also be competing this weekend in Atlanta. Worrell holds the top seed in the 100m butterfly, while Comerford sits in second in the 100m freestyle. Harting is seeded third in the 200m butterfly, Acosta ranks 13th in the 800m freestyle, and Claverie sits in 16th in the 200m breaststroke.Â

History was made last season for the Cardinals as they became the first ACC program in history to have both its men's and women's teams finish among the top-five in the team standings at the NCAA Championships in the same year. The women's team recorded their highest finish in program history with a fourth-place showing at NCAAs while the men's team finished a program-high fifth place. The Cardinal men were the team runners-up at the ACC Championships and the women secured third place.
