Louisville Team Notes
- The loss snapped Louisville's winning streak over USF at six games. The streak had been the team's fifth-longest active streak over a Division I opponent. Morehead State (11 straight) is the victim of the Cards' longest current string.
- Longest active winning streaks over Division I opponents
1. 11 - Morehead State (began 5.8.01)
2. 10 - Butler (4.30.96)
3. 7 - Murray State (4.15.97)
3. 7 - Villanova (5.21.08)
5. 6 - Bowling Green (2.27.09)
5. 6 - Marshall (3.21.95)
5. 6 - Ohio State (4.16.08)
- USF won for just the second time in the teams' past 12 matchups, scoring 4+ runs for only the fourth time during that stretch. The Bulls now lead the all-time series 38-29.
- The Bulls won in Louisville for the first time since April 27, 2007, snapping a seven-game home win streak for the Cards over USF. U of L outscored the Bulls 39-13 during the streak.
- The Cards completed their eighth straight BIG EAST series victory at home. Notre Dame was the last to win a series over Louisville in Louisville, doing so from April 24-26, 2009 (two of three). Louisville has taken 10 of its last 11 conference series overall.
- The Cardinals plated a first-inning run for the third consecutive game, the first time they have done that since May 15-20, 2009. Louisville scored a whopping 17 runs in the opening inning in those three games, plating four in the series finale against USF (May 15) and then six and seven, respectively, in its first two BIG EAST Tournament games (Cincinnati and Notre Dame).
- Louisville last scored a run in the first inning of every game of a BIG EAST series in 2009 against Notre Dame.
- A run in the first inning of the Cards' next contest would give the team first-inning tallies in four straight games for the first time since the 2007 College World Series. That year, U of L scored a run in the first inning of the final game of the Super Regionals, a 20-2 win over Oklahoma State, before plating one, two, and one, respectively, in the opening frame of its three CWS contests.
- Louisville stole two more bases (both by Ryan Wright) in Saturday's game, giving the team eight for the series. The eight steals tie for the Cards' most in a BIG EAST set since they swiped nine at Cincinnati from May 17-19, 2007.
- The Bulls' seven-run fifth tied for the largest inning by a Cardinal foe since Rutgers put up a nine-spot in the fifth inning of a 13-5 win over the Cards at Jim Patterson Stadium on May 17, 2008. The seven-run inning is tied for the second-largest by a Cardinal foe over the last seven seasons.
- Largest innings by opponents, since 2005
1. 9 (5th) - Rutgers (H) - 5.17.08 (L, 5-13)
2. 7 (5th) - USF (H) - 4.23.11 (L, 5-10)
2. 7 (1st) - Bowling Green (H) - 2.20.10 (W, 8-7)
2. 7 (6th) - St. John's (A) - 5.10.09 (L, 15-19)
2. 7 (7th) - Georgia (A) - 5.31.08 (L, 8-9)
2. 7 (6th) - USF (N) - 5.26.05 (L, 1-11)
- The Bulls' 18 hits were the most for a Louisville opponent since West Virginia had 19 in Louisville's 12-9, 11-inning win on April 17 of last season. The 18 hits tied the Jim Patterson Stadium opponent record, first set by East Carolina during the stadium's opening weekend back in 2005 (April 17).
- USF became the first BIG EAST opponent to score double-digit runs in Louisville since Notre Dame on April 26, 2009 (13).
- USF catcher Andrew Longley's grand slam in the seven-run inning was the first allowed by Louisville since Tim Morris of St. John's went deep with the bags juiced on May 8, 2009, in Queens, a game the Cards still won 10-8. Longley was the first opposing player to hit a one at Jim Patterson Stadium since Notre Dame's David Casey hit a two-out, game-tying grand slam in the seventh inning of Louisville's 13-12 loss to the Irish on April 26, 2009.
- The grand slam was the 13th in stadium history and the fifth by an opposing player. Andrew Clark holds the stadium record with three career slams, including two last season.
Louisville Player Notes
- Freshman Ty Young's double in the first inning was his fourth in the last seven games (he had three over his first 29 contests).
- After a 1-for-4 day with a walk and two steals, Wright is hitting .464 (13-for-28) with two doubles, two homers, 11 RBI, and seven steals (on seven attempts) in seven career games against USF.
- Saturday marked the first time Wright appeared in a game against USF and did not drive in a run. He had brought home eight runs in his last three games alone versus USF.
- With the two steals, Wright moved into a 10th-place tie in Louisville career history with 35 thefts. Tommy Barnes also had 35 stolen bases from 1991-93. Wright has been successful on 16 of his last 17 attempts and has been tossed out just six times in his career.
- Wright's three-game steal streak ties a career long, a feat he also accomplished from Feb. 27-March 3, 2010. Drew Haynes was the last Cardinal to steal a base in four straight games, doing so from Feb. 28-March 6 of last season.
- Wright's four steals in the three-game set were the most by a Cardinal in a BIG EAST series (tied for the most in any three-game span, in fact) since Justin McClanahan had five in the series with Rutgers from May 16-17, 2008.
- Wright drew his sixth walk--to just two strikeouts--in the last seven games on Saturday. In the previous nine games, Wright had fanned 11 times without drawing a free pass.
- Freshman backstop Kyle Gibson has made the most of his last four starts, pounding seven hits in 16 at bats (.438 average) over that span.
- Senior reliever Gabriel Shaw made his 98th career pitching appearance in a Louisville uniform on Saturday, giving him sole possession of second on the Cardinal all-time list and leaving him just three shy of tying Gavin Logsdon's (2006-09) school record.
- Career pitching appearances, Louisville history
1. 101 - Gavin Logsdon (2006-09)
2. 98 - Gabriel Shaw (2008-Present)
3. 97 - Brian Halford (2003-06)
4. 96 - Griffin Bailey (2003-06)
5. 81 - Carlos Fernandez (2000-03)
- Shaw allowed two runs for the second straight outing, the first time he has yielded multiple runs in consecutive appearances since April 12-16, 2008 (two each at USF and Ohio State).
- Since recording six walks and six strikeouts over a three-start stretch from March 18-April 1, sophomore Matt Koch has punched out 14 and walked just four in three outings. Koch fanned four and allowed only one free pass in 4.0 innings on Saturday.
- Senior Drew Haynes' fifth-inning RBI knock gave him an RBI in all three games of the series. Haynes entered the weekend with just one RBI in his last 15 games, but finished the series 3-for-7 with four RBI.
- Haynes' second-inning sacrifice bunt allowed him to take over the team lead in that category (now six this season) and gave him 46 for his career. Haynes has led the team in sacrifices each of the last three seasons.
- Senior J.J. Ethel extended his overall hitting streak to six games and his streak at Jim Patterson Stadium to five with a 2-for-4 effort. Ethel is 10-for-19 (.526) in those five games at home, notching two hits each time.
- The last Cardinal to have five consecutive multi-hit games at home was Wright from May 15-June 5 last season. With one more, Ethel will be the first Louisville player with six straight since Justin McClanahan had seven multi-hit games in succession at Jim Patterson Stadium from March 15-26, 2008.
- Consecutive multi-hit games at home, since 2008
1. 7 - Justin McClanahan - 3.15.08-3.26.08 (2-2-2-3-2-2-2)
2. 5 - J.J. Ethel - 4.1.11-Present (2-2-2-2-2)
2. 5 - Ryan Wright - 5.15.10-6.5.10 (2-2-2-2-2)
2. 5 - Chris Dominguez - 4.24.09-5.6.09 (2-2-3-3-3)
2. 5 - Adam Duvall - 3.25.09-4.11.09 (2-3-2-3-2)
2. 5 - Chris Dominguez - 3.5.08-3.14.08 (2-2-3-2-3)
2. 5 - Justin McClanahan - 2.23.08-3.11.08 (2-2-4-2-3)
- Junior Tony Zych's 1.2-inning outing was his longest of the season. Zych has held opponents to 0-for-11 hitting with four strikeouts over his last three outings, covering 3.2 innings.
- Junior Stewart Ijames worked a walk for the fifth straight league game and also picked up a pair of hits on Saturday, giving him four multi-hit outings in the last six contests (.381 average over that span). Ijames has 13 walks in BIG EAST games (compared to five outside conference play), second in the conference only to Pittsburgh's John Schultz (14).
- Freshman Ryan Seiz tied a career high with three hits in the game. The multi-hit game was his ninth, while his two-RBI day was his fourth of the season. Seiz is hitting .462 (6-for-13) since ending an 0-for-9 stretch.
