LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball team finished day four of the 2010 Omaha Challenge with the tire flip and the "move the mountain" competition on Thursday.
Freshman Adam Engel opened the day by winning the tire flip after he flipped a 350-pound tire end-over-end for 30-yards in a time of 29.24 seconds. Senior Gabriel Shaw (Team Red) was second with a time of 35.26, while sophomore Cade Stallings (Team Red) was third at 35.57. Freshman Jeff Thompson (Team Red) was fourth with a time of 36.04 and sophomore Andy Flett (Team Black) was fifth at 37.07.
In the afternoon event, Team Black earned 40 bonus points in the team matchup by winning the "move the mountain" competition. Overall, Team Black and captain Matt Koch continue to lead the way with 4,857 points, while Team Red and captain Zak Wasserman have 4,770 points with two days left.
Through Thursday's events, freshman Cody Ege and junior Travis Tingle are tied for first place with 371 points overall. Engel has moved into third with 370 points and is followed by Wasserman in fourth with 368. Flett and freshman Jeff Gardner are tied for fifth with 359 points.
The 2010 Omaha Challenge will conclude on Friday with the tug-of-war at 6 a.m., and the 300-yard medley at 2 p.m.
About the Omaha Challenge
Two captains are selected and teams are drafted to compete against one another in a five-day series of events that tests the athleticism of the teams and the individuals, with a team crown and an individual champion to be named at the end of the competition. Sports performance coach Eric Hammer oversees the competition, while also motivating his charges to extend themselves to their limits.
The 10 events for 2010 include the 2100-yard shuttle run, pull-ups, towel hang, bike race, 100-meter swim, sandpit relay race, tire flip, "move the mountain", tug-of-war and 300-yard medley.
