LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team kicked off a 14-game homestand with a 6-5 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.

Louisville improved to 4-4 on the season with the win and will now turn its attention to a three-game weekend series against Central Michigan.

The majority of the offense on both sides came in the first three innings on Wednesday.

Louisville jumped on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo home run from Tague Davis, his fourth in the last five contests.

Eastern Kentucky (2-6) answered with two runs in the second to edge back in front, but the Cards responded with two of their own. Jimmy Nugent laced a single into left to drive home Jax Hisle and Bayram Hot and give Louisville the lead back.

The game seesawed again in the third though. EKU plated a pair in the top of the frame to lead 4-3 before Hisle dropped a two-out double into right-center that edged the Cards back in front.

The scoring held at 5-4 as Jake Schweitzer, Ty Starke and Colton Hartman combined to put up three consecutive scoreless frames. Nugent then struck again in the sixth, tucking a ball inside the third base bag to bring home Hisle.

EKU cut the lead back to one with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and was threatening with the bases loaded and only one away. However, Jack Brown was able to induce a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and keep the Cards on top.

Brown followed with a scoreless eighth and flipped the ball to Aaron England for the ninth. After a strikeout to start the final frame, England issued a walk to put the tying run on. The sophomore got a groundball from the next batter though, and the Cardinals turned their third double play of the night to seal the victory.

Schweitzer (1-0) picked up the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief work. England recorded his second save of the year.

Nugent was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs in the win. Hisle and Griffin Crain each added two-hit games.
