LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville was unable to complete a sweep of Rutgers Saturday, falling the to the Knights 13-5 on the final day of the regular season.
The Cardinals will enter the BIG EAST championship as the four seed and face number five seed Seton Hall on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. ET in Clearwater, Florida at Bright House Field.
Conference champion St. John's and number eight seed Villanova are also in the UofL bracket and are scheduled to play following the Cardinal game Tuesday. Cincinnati is the two seed and plays seventh-seeded West Virginia at 5:00 p.m., while number three seed Notre Dame matches up with the host team, sixth-seeded USF in the 8:00 game.
In a pregame ceremony, seven seniors were honored, as they played in their final regular season home game at Patterson Stadium. Student manager Jeff Mason, pitchers James Belanger, B.J. Rosenberg and Zack Pitts, shortstop Greg Del George, second baseman Justin McClanahan and catcher Derrick Alfonso were all presented with a framed game jersey prior to the first pitch.
Louisville (37-19, 16-11 BIG EAST) took a 2-0 lead in the first. Freshman Josh Richmond smoked his 14th double of the season down the right field line and moved to third on a single by McClanahan. Chris Dominguez's team-leading sixth sac fly of the season made it 1-0 Cards, and Stewart Ijames's RBI double made it 2-0 UofL.
In the second, the Cards expanded the advantage to 4-0. With two away, Richmond singled and stole second. An RBI single by McClanahan plated Richmond, and Dominguez singled home McClanahan.
Jared Jimenez hit a solo home run with one down in the fourth and after a walk to Luis Feliz, Vinnie Sangemino's RBI double cut the lead in half.
McClanahan doubled with one out in the fourth, and after swiping third, a second sac fly by Dominguez stretched the lead to 5-2, but Rutgers would plate the final 11 runs of the game.
Consecutive two-run doubles by Feliz and Sangemino, and home runs off the bats of Donny Callahan and Tom Edwards highlighted a nine-run fifth. The Knights added two more in the sixth for the final margin.
Cardinal starter Bob Revesz gave up two runs in the first four innings, and after the first two batters of the fifth inning reached, a sharp comebacker glanced off his pitching hand, scoring a run and knocking him out of the game. He allowed four runs in four-plus innings on eight hits and a walk, striking out four.
He was spelled by Gabriel Shaw, who failed to retire a batter, giving up three earned runs on two hits and a walk. Neil Holland was victimized for two earned runs on three hits, striking out two in an inning out of the bullpen.
Gavin Logsdon permitted one earned run on three hits, striking out one in an inning. Jon Clarence was sharp, retiring all five he faced, striking out one, and Belanger struck out two, giving up a hit in the final inning.
The Cardinals got to starter Tony Wargo early, but he was replaced by senior Matt Patterson, who mystified the Cardinal offense, allowing a run on eight hits, striking out two in the final 7.1 innings, improving his record to 3-1. Shaw dropped to 4-4 with the loss.
Dominguez drove in three on the day and moves into a tie for 10th in the Cardinal record books with 65 this season. McClanahan had three hits, and his 21st double ties him for the 5th most in Cardinal history.
Del George celebrated senior day with two hits and a walk, while Alfonso, making his first start since April 8, was 2 for 5. Nate Holland and Alec Lowrey each belted pinch singles for the final two Cardinal hits.
