Dominguez' Homer Sends Cards To 4-3 Win over Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Chris Dominguez belted a tie-breaking two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift the University of Louisville to a 4-3 win over #11 Missouri, staving off elimination for the second consecutive game, and setting up a winner-take-all re-match with the top-seeded Tigers Monday at 2:00 p.m. ET for the right to face Oklahoma State in a Super Regional.
"It was a great day for Cardinal baseball" noted Head Coach Dan McDonnell. The Cards had to defeat #28 Miami 8-7 earlier in the day in an elimination game for the right to play again.
"We took advantage of the opportunity to compete, and I can't say enough about the bullpen as well as how hard the position players played today,"
Aaron Senne's solo home run to right in the second put the Tigers up 1-0. It was Senne's sixth home run of the season.
The Cardinals (43-21) evened the score in the top of the third. Boomer Whiting drilled a one out double to right center and was singled home by Logan Johnson.
Missouri took the lead in the fourth when Cardinal starter Colby Wark loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batter before exiting the game. Gavin Logsdon entered and induced a 4-6-3 double play ground ball off the bat of John McKee, but the go ahead run was plated on the play.
Louisville then tied the game at two in the top of the sixth. Dominguez was hit by a pitch with one out and on a hit and run, Pete Rodriguez grounded out to short, but as the out was being recorded at first Dominguez never stopped, moving to third on the play. The throw across the diamond by McKee was wild and Dominguez scored the tying run.
In the Missouri (42-17) seventh, McKee singled with one out and a high popup to left was lost in the lights by Isaiah Howes for a double, putting runners at second and third. Kyle Hollander entered and struck out Kyle Mach and induced a groundout to second by Gary Arndt to cease the threat.
Jorge Castillo singled with one down in the eight and gave way to pinch runner Chris Pelaez. Dominguez stepped to the plate and crushed the first pitch down the left field line, just fair for his ninth home run of the season, and second on the day.
Missouri DH Jacob Priday drilled a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield wall to open the ninth, cutting the lead to a single run. Trevor Coleman then walked, and pinch runner Kurt Calvert stole second. After Hollander struck out McKee for the first out of the ninth, the Cardinals intentionally walked Senne after the count ran to 3-1.
Hollander fanned Kyle Mach and Arndt popped up to center with the tying run at second and the potential winning run at first to seal the victory.
Allowing a run on a hit and two walks, while striking out three in 2.2 innings Hollander picked up the win to improve to 4-1 on the season. Wark lasted three-plus innings, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three.
Logsdon went 2.2 scoreless, giving up a single, and Andrew Salguiero gave up two hits and struck out one, working two-thirds of an inning out of the pen.
MU starter Ian Berger logged six solid innings, giving up one earned run on six hits, striking out five. Greg Folgia (5-4) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in two innings. He struck out one. Ryan Gargano tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.
"We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete again tomorrow," McDonnell added.
