
Cardinal Nine Splits Twinbill With Northwestern

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville junior Trystan Magnuson guided the Cards to an 11-0 win in game one of a doubleheader against Northwestern, twirling seven shutout innings. The Cardinals were edged by the Wildcats 5-4 in the nightcap.
In game one the Cardinals (1-6) put a four-spot on the board in the first, with all four runs scoring with two out. Boomer Whiting's bunt single opened the frame, and he moved to second on a sac bunt by Chris Cates. Nick Haley walked, and later with two out Daniel Burton and Isaiah Howes hit back-to-back RBI singles. Jorge Castillo then cleared the bases with a two-run double to left-center to cap the stanza.
Whiting reached in the second on his second bunt single of the game. He then stole second, moved to third on a bunt single by Cates, and after a walk to Haley, Whiting stole home to make it 5-0 Cards.
Logan Johnson and Burton hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth and they eventually scored on a sac fly by Castillo and an RBI single by Urti extending the advantage to 7-0.
Whiting was hit by a pitch leading off the fifth and stole second, his third steal of the game. Haley reached on an error, and Johnson singled home Whiting. Burton doubled home Haley and Johnson scored on a sac fly by Howes giving the Cards a 10-0 lead.
In the eighth, Pete Rodriguez scored on Alec Lowrey's first career hit to seal the 11-0 win.
Magnuson (1-1) went a career-long seven innings, matching his career-high with six strikeouts. He scattered four hits and a walk, facing just four over the minimum. He tossed 1-2-3 innings in the third, fifth and sixth in earning the win.
Ryne Mantooth fanned one in a perfect eighth and Andrew Salgueiro allowed a walk and struck out one in the ninth.
Northwestern (2-4) starter George Kontos (0-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits and five walks in four innings, striking out four. Four other Wildcat hurlers tossed an inning apiece.
Burton finished game one going 4 for 6 with two RBI and two runs scored. It was the third four-hit game of his career. Whiting was 2 for 2 with three runs scored, moving into sixth place in Cardinal history with 37 career steals. Haley moved into the 10th spot in Cardinal history having now walked 101 times.
Louisville took and early lead in game two, taking a 2-0 advantage in the second. Castillo singled with one out, and an out later Casey Albanese blooped a single down the right field line that was mishandled by Antonio Mule, allowing Castillo to score and moving Albanese to third. Whiting then doubled home Albanese.
Pat McMahon's RBI double scored Caleb Fields in the third, cutting the U of L lead in half. In the top of the sixth a throwing error by Michael Urti and an RBI groundout by Pat Dietz put the Cats on top 3-2.
In the bottom of the inning Burton singled and two batters later Castillo unloaded on the first pitch, sending it over the fence in right for his first home run of the season, a two run shot that gave the Cards a 4-3 lead.
Anthony Wyklendt's RBI triple in the eighth tied the game, and McMahon's sac fly in the ninth plated what turned out to be the winning run.
Cardinal starter David Torcise was touched for three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out five but did not figure in the decision.
Reliever Scott Jenkins was saddled with the loss, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out one in three-plus innings. Brian Halford walked one in recording the final three outs.
Northwestern reliever Andrew Smith picked up the win giving up a hit in 1.2 innings. Dan Schwartz gave up a hit in the ninth before recording the final out for his second save of the year.
Burton was 6 for 10 in the twin bill, while Castillo drove in five. Whiting, who was plunked twice on the day, joins Adam Haley in a tie for third place in that category with 30 on his career.
The teams will meet in the rubber game of the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET in Jim Patterson Stadium. Admission is free.
