Relays shine in meet with regional rival
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 17/6-ranked University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to No. 7/9-ranked Indiana Hoosiers Friday evening at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.

The No. 17-ranked Louisville men fell 193-107 and the No. 6 women fell 155-145.

The Cardinals were powered by six multiple winners. Â Denis Petrashov swept the breaststroke events with Gabi Albiero winning the 50 free, the 100 free and the 200 Free Relay. Julia Dennis and Ella Welch were on both winning relay teams while Tristen Ulett won the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 butterfly. Senior Christiana Regenauer won the 100 fly and the 200 Free Relay.

The Cardinal women got off to a fast start, winning the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Tristen Ulett (27.40), Ella Welch (25.89), Karoline Barrett (24.12) and Julia Dennis (21.82) combined for the winning time of 1:39.23. Â The UofL men touched second in the 200 medley relay as Dalton Lowe, Denis Petrashov, Abdelrahman El-Araby, and Michael Eastman boarded a 1:26.50.

IU's Mariah Denigan won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:48.97 with Louisville's Paige Kuwata touching third in 10:01.67 and Liberty Williams going 10:06.60. Hoosier Mikey Calvillo won the men's 1000 free with a time of 9:04.23. Ilia Sibirtsev was the first Cardinal to finish with a third place time of 9:10.74 Â ahead of teammate Eli Shoyat's 9:18.13.

The Hoosiers won the women's 200 freestyle when Anna Peplowski put up a 1:47.35. Louisville's Paige Hetrick was the top Cardinal finisher with a third place time of 1:49.87. In the men's 200 freestyle, Cardinal Murilo Sartori dueled IU's Rafael Miroslaw down the stretch but was outtouched 1:35.28 to 1:35.46. Louisville's Denis Loktev was third with a time of 1:37.26.

In the 100 backstroke, IU's Kacey McKenna was into the wall first with the winning time of 54.91. Louisville's Abby Hay was second with a time of 55.13. Rye Ulett was fifth in 55.80. For the men, Louisville's Dalton Lowe held off IU's Gavin Wight in a hard-charging finish. Lowe went 47.61 for the win and teammate Charlie Crush (49.65) and Jackson Millard (50.39) were fourth and fifth respectively.

IU's Noelle Peplowski won the women's 100 breast with a time of 1:01.06 just ahead of Cardinal Cecilia Viberg's 1:02.11 and Ella Welch's 1:02.32, good for second and third. Louisville's Denis Petrashov won the men's 100 breast with a time of 53.60. UofL's Luke Shourds was fourth in 55.68 and Aidan Kreiley was fifth in 55.87.

Louisville's Tristen Ulett was the only sub-two minute finisher in the 200 fly with a 1:58.40 and the win. Madie Hall was third in 2:01.54. IU's Brendan Burns set a new pool record with the winning time of 1:43.28. Louisville's Tommy Bried was second, going 1:47.94 and Gustavo Saldo touched third in 1:49.23.

The Cards' Gabi Albiero led a 1-2-3 sweep of the top three spots in the 50 free with a 22.41. Christiana Regenauer was second in 22.73 and Julia Dennis was third in 22.90. For the men, Abdelrahman El-Araby won for the Cards with a time of 19.73. Michael Eastman was third (19.86) and Vlad Dubinin was fifth in 20.29.

In diving, IU's Anne Fowler won the 3-meter springboard with a score of 349.88. Louisville's Jiselle Miller was second (317.25), Lindsay Gizzi was third, scoring a 316.95 and Else Praasterink was fifth with a mark of 290.55. Fowler repeated with a win in the 1-meter with a score of 328.88. Lindsay Gizzi of Louisville was second with a score of 318.08 and Jiselle Miller was third with a 295.20.

For the men's divers on the 1-meter board, IU's Andrew Capobianco won with a score of 418.65. Louisville's Che Stephens was the top Cardinal with a fourth-place time of 342.00. Â IU's Carson Tyler won the 3-meter with a score of 431.40. Che Stephens was the top Cardinal with a 351.75.

Gabi Albiero got her second win of the day when she led a 1-2 finish in the 100 freestyle. She boarded a 48.92 just ahead of teammate Ella Welch's second place time of 49.54. Julia Dennis was fourth with a 50.68. Van Mathias won the men's 100 free for IU with a time of 43.60. Abdelrahman El-Araby was the top finisher for the Cards with a third-place time of 43.66, just .06 off the winning time. Murilo Sartori (44.01) was fifth and Michael Eastman (44.40) was sixth.

The 200 backstroke was won by IU's Anna Peplowski's 1:56.47 with Paige Hetrick right in her wake with a second-place time of 1:57.17. Rye Ulett was third with a 1:59.22 for the Cards. Brendan Burns won the men's 200 back decisively with a time of 1:44.95. Jackson Millard was the top Cardinal with a 1:47.77, good for third.

On the men's side, Louisville's Denis Petrashov made it a breaststroke sweep with a win in the 100 breast and a time of 53.60. Luke Shourds was fourth for the Ville with a 55.68 and Aidan Kreiley was fifth in 55.87.

Liberty Williams was fourth for the Cards, 4:55.82 and Paige Kuwata was fifth with a 4:57.54. In the men's 500 freestyle, Mikey Calvillo of IU finished in 4:23.60 for the win. UofL's Eli Shoyat was sedocnd with a time of 4:25.29 and Ilia Sibirtsev was fourth with a time of 4:29.63.

UofL's Dalton Lowe was second in 47.17 and Gustavo Saldo was fifth in 49.56.

Noelle Peplowski went under two minutes to win the 200 IM in 1:58.30 for IU. Tristen Ulett touched second in 2:00.53, Abby Hay was fourth (2:02.45) and Rye Ulett was fifth in 2:04.28. IU's Luke Barr won in the men's 200 IM with Louisville's Luke Shourds' 1:51.09 placed him fourth as the top Cardinal in the race. Jackson Millard was fifth in 1:51.09.

In the final event, the Cardinal women won the 200 free relay in 1:28.43 put up by Gabi Albiero (22.37), Christiana Regenauer (21.88), Julia Dennis (22.01) and Ella Welch (22.17). The Louisville B-relay team of Karoline Barrett (23.17), Madie Hall (22.62), Paige Hetrick (23.03) and Maddie Luther (23.59) were third in 1:32.41. The Louisville men's A-relay finished second when Abdelrahman El-Araby (19.70), Dalton Lowe (19.43), Caleb Duncan (19.89) and Michael Eastman (19.63) went 1:18.65.
The Cardinals are back in action against long-time rival Cincinnati Saturday, Jan. 28 at noon in the Ralph Wright Natatorium. Senior Day festivities will kickoff the day of racing.Â
