The Cards have 376 points and trail only NC State with 491 and Virginia Tech 399. UNC follows with 353, Virginia (310), Georgia Tech (304), Florida State (266), Notre Dame (243), Duke (227), Pitt (179), Boston College (126.12) and Miami (64).
"Great energy by the guys tonight. We performed very well and we were able to move up on our seeds from the prelims, including two school records by Trevor Carroll in the 500-freestyle and Nolan Tesone in the 200-IM," said Arthur Albiero, UofL head coach.Â
NC State's Anton Ipsen won his second 500 freestyle gold, finishing the event in 4:14.53 in the first event of the evening. Trevor Carroll crushed his own school record with a time of 4:15.77 for second. He gained twp spots from his prelims ranking. In the B-final, the Cards went 1-2-7 put up by Zach Harting (4:19.75), Matthias Lindenbauer (4:22.01), and Jake Schultz (4:26.01).
Â
Brandon Fiala of Virginia Tech won the 200 individual medley for the second straight year with a time of 1:42.26. The junior had to fight off a fast-closing Soeren Dahl from NC State, who finished just behind at 1:42.50. UofL's Nolan Tesone touched in a school record time of 1:43.43 to win bronze. Teammate  Carlos Claverie was sixth in 1:44.72 in the A-final. In the B-final, Josh Quallen touched second in 1:45.39, Jonathan Zoucha  was fourth in 1:45.96 and David Boland was eighth in 1:48.42.  In the C Final: Grigory Tarasevich won the final, touching first in 1:44.66.
"I am pretty happy at where I was in the race. I took a lot of time off my prelims," said UofL senior Nolan Tesone. "I still think there is more time there to be cut execution-wise because it could be a little bit cleaner."
Â
NC State won the 200 free relay, going 1:15.65, just short of their own meet and conference record from last year by .03 seconds. That time is the fastest in the NCAA for the season, and is faster than Texas went in winning the NCAA title last year. North Carolina took second in 1:18.02. The Cards touched third in 1:18.15 put up by Trevor Carroll (19.57), Grigory Tarasevich (19.06), Matthias Lindenbauer (19.97), and David Boland (19.55). Â
Â
The 2016 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships resume Friday morning at 10 a.m. with preliminaries for the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke. The finals for those events, in addition to the 400 medley relay, will get underway at 6 p.m.
