QUEENS, N.Y. - University of Louisville pitchers Justin Marks and Trystan Magnuson combined on a six-hit shutout to pick up a 3-0 win in the nightcap, snap St. John's 13 game win streak, and earn a split of the doubleheader after the Red Storm won the opener 4-2 Saturday.
It marks the first time on the season that the Red Storm has been shutout. The teams will meet for crucial third time on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. to decide the series.
After a fielding error opened the first inning of game one, a sacrifice fly to center by Josh DeLuca and an RBI single by Gil Zayas staked starting pitcher Scott Barnes and St. John's (31-13, 15-5 BIG EAST) to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs.
The Cardinals (32-14, 14-6 BIG EAST) loaded the bases with one out in the third, but Logan Johnson grounded into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. Daniel Burton and Isaiah Howes hit back-to-back singles to open the fourth, but they remained stranded after the next three batters were retired in order.
Zayas and Anthony Smith added consecutive RBI singles in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-0 Red Storm.
Louisville cut the lead in half in the top of the seventh with a small two-out rally. Derrick Alfonso drew a walk and stole second before Chris Cates singled him home to put the Cards on the board. Cates then stole second on a pick-off play and moved to third on a throwing error by SJU first baseman Ryan Mahoney. Boomer Whiting's ground ball to short was mishandled by Red Storm shortstop Jeff Grantham, allowing Cates to score, but that was all of the offense the Cardinal could muster.
Barnes (4-2) limited the Cards to two runs - one of which was earned on three singles and two walks, striking out five in eight innings to earn the win. Collin Lynch picked up his eighth save of the season, shutting down the Cards in the ninth.
Zack Pitts (7-3) pitched well but took the loss, giving up four runs, two of which were earned , scattering 10 hits and striking out three in 7.2 innings. Skylar Meade retired the only batter he faced.
In game two the Cardinals put up a three-spot in the fourth. After Burton lead off with a double, Howes traded places with him on a fielder's choice in which Burton extended the rundown until Howes was at second. Dominguez then singled him home for a 1-0 lead. Jorge Castillo belted a hit and run single to right to put runners at the corners and a suicide squeeze by Pete Rodriguez plated the second run of the inning. Derrick Alfonso's RBI single scored Castillo and gave the Cards the 3-0 lead.
Marks, who was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and Rivals.com Freshman of the Week last week, tossed 7.1 shutout innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out three, improving his record to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in seven BIG EAST starts.
Magnuson gave up a hit and fanned one in 1.2 innings to record his sixth save of the season, tying him for seventh on the single season list at U of L. His seven career saves is also tied for seventh on the career list. His career ERA is 3.31, good for second in Cardinal history.
SJU starter matt Tosoni (5-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three in 4.2 innings. Nick Cenatiempo walked two and struck out six, allowing a hit in the final 4.1 innings.
Cates played in his 217th career game - all start, to establish a new Cardinal record. He is second in at bats (815) and fourth in hits (252).
Howes played in his 206th game (7th), Whiting in his 202nd(9th) and Burton and Johnson in game number 200(T10).
Burton moved into a tie for ninth with his 45th career double.
An elaborate ceremony that featured members of the 1949 St. John's College World Series Team, including former basketball coach Lou Carneseca, and was presided over by legendary public address voice of the New York Yankees Bob Sheppard, preceded game one of the doubleheader and dedicated the field in the name of Jack Kaiser, a prominent student athlete, coach and administrator for the Red Storm.
