LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Pitt's Jordan Herr hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth, snapping a 2-2 tie and lifting the Panthers to a 6-2 win over the University of Louisville Saturday in the rubber game of the series.
Chris Cates singled to left leading off the Cardinal (21-10, 6-3 BIG EAST) third, giving him a 14-game hit streak. An out later Logan Johnson belted a 2-0 pitch well over the fence in right for his 10th home run on the season, equalling his career-high and putting the Cards up 2-0.
Pitt (13-14, 7-4 BIG EAST) got on the board in the top of the fourth when Brian Muldowney hit a leadoff triple and came home on a sac fly by Nick Mullins, trimming the Cardinal lead to 2-1.
The Panthers knotted the game at two in the sixth after Muldowney opened the inning with a double, moved to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch by Cardinal hurler Colby Wark.
Williams drew a leadoff walk and Dan Lopez blooped a single down the right field line ahead of the home run by Herr. Morgan Kielty homered to open the ninth to seal the win.
Freshman Nate Reed went the distance for Pitt, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out nine, improving his record to 2-3.
"It is disappointing because we didn't play well in all three areas, on the mound, in the field and offensively," noted Head Coach Dan McDonnell.
"I thought Reed was phenomenal today. It was a tough weekend, but the good news is that we have an instate rival coming in Wednesday night. If your kids can't get fired up for that then they don't love baseball."
Cardinal starter Tyler Mathis exited after two innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Wark was touched for two runs on two hits and four walks, striking out three. Skylar Meade gave up a hit and struck out one in an inning of work.
Trystan Magnuson (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk, fanning three in two innings. The runs were the first earned runs surrendered by Magnuson in 24.1 IP on the season.
Kyle Thornton allowed a run on a hit and a walk, striking out one in two-thirds of an inning while Gavin Logsdon retired the only batter he faced to close the ninth.
Daniel Burton had two of the Cards' five hits. Boomer Whiting was 0 for 3 with a walk, snapping his hit streak at 19 games, the fourth-longest in school history. Johnson was plunked twice, giving him 59 in his career - 11th in NCAA history.
The Cards will next host instate rival Kentucky on Wednesday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m. in Jim Patterson Stadium.
Admission to the baseball game will still be free, but there will be reserved seating in the grandstand.
