BETHESDA, Md. - A three-run home run by Georgetown center fielder Timmy Jones in the fifth put the Hoyas on top for good in a 7-4 win over the University of Louisville in the series opener on Friday at Shirley Povich Field.
The Hoyas (13-17, 2-5 BIG EAST) took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Jones and an RBI groundout by Ryan Craft.
Louisville (12-18, 4-3 BIG EAST) evened the score in the third. Isaiah Howes drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single to right center by Chris Cates. A single to left center by Logan Johnson put runners at the corners, and when Johnson broke for second on a steal attempt, an errant throw by GU catcher Josh Davis went into center field, plating Cates.
The Cardinals took their only lead of the afternoon in the top of the fourth when Jorge Castillo opened the frame with a double to left center and later scored on a double off the center field wall by Howes, making it 3-2 Cards.
There were two out and two on when Jones homered to left center for a 5-3 lead.
An RBI double by Matt Harrigan in the sixth scored Craft, and an RBI single by Matt Johnson in the eighth pushed across Harrigan for a 7-3 advantage.
The Cardinals put the pressure on in the ninth with a leadoff walk to Howes, and a single by pinch-hitter Tyler Christensen, but Nick Haley lined into a double play. Cates then singled and Johnson doubled home Christensen, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Daniel Burton lined out to right to end the ballgame.
GU starter Warren Sizemore (3-2) picked up the win, giving up just two earned runs over 7.1 innings on seven hits and two walks. He struck out five.
Scott Jenkins gave up five runs on five hits and three walks in the first five innings, falling to 2-4 with the loss. He also struck out five.
Griffin Bailey surrendered a run on three hits and a walk in two innings, while freshman Andrew Salgueiro was touched for a run on three hits in the eighth.
Johnson had three hits to extend his career-long hit streak to 12 games, doubling twice.
The teams will meet for game two of the series on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET.
