BETHESDA, Md. - Four University of Louisville pitchers combined on a two-hitter and sophomore Jorge Castillo drove in a career-high six in a 14-0 whitewashing of Georgetown on Saturday night at Shirley Povich Field.
Chris Cates reached in an error with one out in the first, Logan Johnson drew a walk and Daniel Burton loaded the bases with a bunt single before a sac fly by Castillo made it 1-0 Cards (13-18, 5-3 BIG EAST).
Derrick Alfonso singled on the first pitch of the second inning and moved to third on a double by Michael Urti. A walk to Alec Lowrey loaded the bases and a second free pass, this one to Nick Haley pushed across a run for a 2-0 lead.
An RBI fielder's choice by Cates made it 3-0 when the throw to the plate was over the catcher's head. Johnson pushed in a run with his second walk of the evening, and Castillo belted a two-run single for a 5-0 U of L advantage.
Johnson walked for the third time on the fourth inning and eventually scored on an RBI single by Castillo, making it 6-0.
Alfonso doubled to open the fifth and was plated on a two out double by Haley pushing the lead to seven.
Johnson lead off the sixth inning with his sixth home run of the season, and Pete Rodriguez jacked his first long ball of the year to open the seventh for a 10-0 Cardinal lead.
Later in the seventh, Cates singled and Johnson tied a U of L single game record with his fourth walk of the game. After a wild pitch nudged them both into scoring position it was Castillo again ripping a two-run single. Isaiah Howes then doubled home Castillo for a 13-0 score.
Castillo was hit by a pitch with one away in the ninth and closed the scoring when he was doubled home by Kyle Carden.
U of L starter B.J. Rosenberg (4-3) was dominant in the win, with five innings of one-hit baseball. He walked one and hit a batter, but did not allow a Hoya (14-18, 2-6 BIG EAST) to touch second base, striking out seven.
Gavin Logsdon struck out one, working the sixth, and Zack Pitts gave up a single and hit two in two innings, fanning three.
Ryne Mantooth tossed a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out the final batter of the game.
It was the fifth shutout of the season for the Cardinal pitching staff, and only four of the 32 Georgetown batters hit the ball out of the infield.
Hoya starter Andy Ferich lasted an inning and six batters in taking the loss. He dropped to 1-4, surrendering six runs, four earned on three hits and four walks, striking out one.
Castillo finished the evening 3 for 4 with two runs and six RBI. Burton, Cates, Alfonso and Urti also had multi-hit games. Cates and Johnson both scored three runs.
Steady rains in the Washington D.C. area delayed the start of the game and made for sloppy field conditions, with game time temperatures hovering below 40 degrees.
Due to the late finish, the Cards and Hoyas will hook up for the rubber game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET, instead of the original start time of 12:00 p.m.
