ATHENS, Ga. - A tight game was broken open again in the late innings by Georgia as they beat the University of Louisville 13-5 in game two of the weekend series Saturday evening at Foley Field. A five-run sixth and three-run seventh was more than the Cardinals could overcome.
With two out in the third, leadoff man Joey Side walked and scored on a triple down the left field line by Gordon Beckham. Jason Jacobs then singled in Beckham to make it 2-0 Bulldogs (10-2).
The Cards (5-10) took a short-lived lead in the top of the fifth. Derrick Alfonso and Michael Urti hit back-to-back singles to open the frame and Urti tagged moved to third on a liner to right by Pete Rodriguez.
With two out, Nick Haley belted a single to left center, scoring a pair, and when Haley advanced to second on the throw to the plate, UGA catcher Jason Jacobs sailed his throw to the outfield, scoring Haley from second and making it 3-2 Cards.
The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the fifth. After walks to Kyle Keen and Matthew Dunn, Side tripled down the left field line for a 4-3 UGA lead, and a sac fly by Gordon Beckham capped the inning at 5-3 Dogs.
Louisville trimmed the advantage to 5-4 in the sixth, when Isaiah Howes tripled down the third base line and scored on an RBI single by Jorge Castillo.
Then the Bulldogs took over. Bobby Felmy made it a two-run game with a solo home run to center to open the sixth. Eleven batters stepped to the plate in the five-run inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Beckham.
Already up 10-4, an RBI double by Side, an RBI single by Beckham and a balk made it 13-4
Another RBI single by U of L's Castillo plated Logan Johnson in the eighth to close the scoring.
Cardinal starter David Torcise (0-3) lasted 4.1 innings in the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out two. He picked off three runners in the game.
Mike Lynn surrendered two runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. Jon Harbridge was touched for four runs on two hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one.
Andrew Salgueiro faced on batter and walked him and was followed by Ryne Mantooth who tossed an inning and a third, giving up three runs on five hits. He fanned two.
Zack Pitts allowed a hit and a walk in an inning of work.
Georgia starter Mickey Westphal (2-0) picked up the win, allowing four runs - three earned, in 5.1 innings on seven hits and two walks. He struck out five.
Alfonso was 3 for 3 with a walk on the afternoon for the Cards. Haley and Castillo each drove in two.
Louisville will look to salvage a game in the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.ET.
