Cardinals Win Gold and Silver on First Day at ACC Championships

UofL Relays shine with two divers advancing to finals
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Louisville men won gold and the women won silver on the first day of competition at the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Tuesday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The Cardinals' men's team is in seventh and the women are in second after the first day of competition. The women have scored 155 points and trail only North Carolina (159) with defending NCAA Champions Virginia sitting in third with 154, NC State is fourth (144), followed by Duke (142), Notre Dame 139), Florida State (128), Virginia Tech (115), Miami (96), Pitt (85), and Georgia Tech (85). Â The men scored 114 on the first day. Notre Dame has taken an early lead with 176 points, followed by NC State (159), Pitt (151), North Carolina (138), Florida State (132), Virginia Tech (124.5), Georgia Tech tied with Louisville with 114, Duke (88), Miami (54) and Virginia (53.5).

In the first race of the championships, Louisville touched fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.37, put up by Karoline Barrett (24.55), Ella Welch (26.69), Christiana Regenauer (22.91) and Gabi Albiero (21.22). The event was won by Virginia, with the Cavaliers putting up a 1:33.69.

For the Cardinals in the men's 200 medley relay, Dalton Lowe (20.78), Denis Petrashov (23.23), Charlie Crush (20.41) and Matias Santiso (19.02) combined for a fifth-place time of 1:23.44. The event was won by NC State's time of 1:21.86, a new American Record.

In women's 3-meter diving, Lindsay Gizzi and Else Praasterink advanced to the finals for the Cardinals. Praasterink finished sixth with a score of 310.50 and Gizzi was seventh with a total of 317.80. Â In men's 1-meter diving prelims, Louisville's Rayce Winn boarded a 240.90, Che Stephens had a 230.70 and Adam Sneden posted a 209.20 but did not advance to the finals.

In the 800 free relay, the Cardinal women put up a 7:00.31. The foursome of Fernanda Celidonio (1.45.36), Summer Cardwell (1:45.21), Tristen Ulett (1:45.76)Â and Paige Hetrick (1:43.98)Â won silver for the first podium of the Championship, dropping 2.40 from their entry time. Virginia took gold with a pool, meet and conference record time of 6:46.28.Â

The men won gold in the 800 free relay, putting up the second fastest time in school history with a 6:09.87, eight seconds faster than their entry time. The foursome of Murilo Sartori (1:32.35), Guy Brooks (1:32.41), Denis Loktev (1:33.09) and an anchor by Gustavo Saldo of 1:32.02 put the Cards atop the podium.
