
Cardinal Women Lead and Men Second After Day 1 at SMU Classic

DALLAS -- After a full day of racing, the University of Louisville women lead the six-team field at the SMU Classic and the men are in second at Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center.
The men (158) trail only Indiana (175) and are ahead of Virginia Tech (146), Auburn (135), SMU (112) and Texas A&M (111). The women scored 166 points to lead Texas A&M (149), Auburn (145), Miami (143), Virginia Tech (126) and SMU (108). Saturday's competition is set for 12 p.m.  (ET). The meet will be streamed and live results will be available on SMUMustangs.com, DiveMeets and on the Meet Mobile App.
The 2024 edition of the Classic features four teams that finished in the top 26 at the NCAA Championships last year. Â Â The Cardinal women, who finished sixth at NCAAs last year, will face Auburn (12th), Miami (40th), Texas A&M (14th), and Virginia Tech (26th). Â The Louisville men (15th at last year's NCAAs) will take on Auburn (12th), Indiana (4th), Texas A&M (16th) and Virginia Tech (9th).
Event Format
The event features each team bringing eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. Each swimmer may compete in three events per day, and events will be contested in two heats, with one swimmer from each school in each heat. Divers will compete on 1- and 3-meter. Scoring will be as follows: Individual: 16-13-12-11-10-9-7-5-4-3-2-1 Â and Relays: 24-20-18-16-14-12

The Cardinals women's 400 medley relay team of Tristen Ulett (53.77), Ella Welch (1:00.37), Gabi Albiero (51.97) and Caroline Larsen (48.26) turned in a 3:34.39 to finish third. On the men's side, the foursome of Charlie Crush (47.48), Denis Petrashov (51.66), Dalton Lowe (45.93) and Guy Brooks touched third in 3:07.22.

Kim Herkle won the 400 IM with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:09.67, two seconds ahead of the field. Summer Cardwell won the B-final with a time of 4:12.49. For the men's 400 IM, freshman Gregg Enoch was second with a B-cut time of 3:43.62 and Jackson Millard won the B-final with a B-cut time of 3:46.01.

In the 200 freestyle, Louisville's Paige Hetrick touched second with a time of 1:46.01 and teammate Fernanda Celidonio won the B-final, turning in a 1:45.72. Murilo Sartori got the men's first win of the day with the winning time of 1:34.46 (a B cut). Guy Brooks won the B-final, going 1:34.57 for a B-cut.

Gabi Albiero was third in the A-final of the 50 free with a time of 22.40 (B-cut). Caroline Larsen won the B-final with a time of 22:16. On the men's side in the 50 free, Dalton Lowe was fifth with a time of 20.01 and Charlie Crush was fifth in the B-final, stopping the clock at 20.07.

In women's 3M diving, Lindsay Gizzi was fourth, posting a score of 269.90. For the men in 1M diving, freshman Mack Molloy was sixth, boarding a score of 274.95.

In the 100 butterfly, Gabi Albiero was second, putting up a time of 52.49 for a B-cut. Caroline Larsen was second in the B-final with a time of 53.02 – also a B-cut. In the men's even, Dalton Lowe was third with a B-cut time of 46.50. Gregg Enoch was fourth in the B-final with a time of 47.61.

In the 100 backstroke, Louisville's Paige Hetrick was fourth with a B-cut time of 53.18 and Tristen Ulett touched third in the B-final with a time of 53.47. In the men's 100 back, Charlie Crush was fifth, boarding a 48.10 and Jackson Millard was second in the B-final, with a time of 47.68.Â

In the women's 100 breaststroke, Ella Welch was second, putting up a B-cut time of 1:00.85 in a tightly contested finish. Kim Herkle was second in the B-final with a time of 1:00.93. For the men's 100 breast, Denis Petrashov bested the field with a pool record time of 51.50 breaking Olympian Nic Fink's mark set a year ago. Freshman Jake Eccleston was second in the B-final with a B-cut time of 53.41. Â

The women's 800 free relay team of Summer Cardwell (1:46.15), Fernanda Celidonio (1:46.20), Tristen Ulett (1:46.83 and Paige Hetrick (1:48.28) knitted together the winning time of 7:07.46. The Louisville men won their 800 free relay when Murilo Sartori, (1:34.75), Guy Brooks (1:34.52), Gregg Enoch (1:34.89) and Jackson Millard (1:36.30) combined for the winning time of 6:20.45.
