About the Cardinals
Â
Louisville is fresh off a split with Kentucky in the Battle of the Bluegrass where Nicolas Albiero's pool record in the 200 butterfly propelled the men to a 165-135 victory while the women fell to the Wildcats 160.5-139.5. The Cardinals swept Northwestern to ring in 2020 where they won 12 events and swept both boards and handily won the Purdue Invitational in November, winning a total of 28 events including all but two relays. Four UofL divers earned NCAA Zone cuts at the NC State/GAC Invitational and 24 Cardinals wrapped up 2019 by competing at the Toyota U.S. Open in Atlanta, Ga.
Â
Earlier in the season, Louisville swept ACC rival Notre Dame as Sophie Cattermole set a new pool record in the 1650 freestyle and Daniel Pinto broke the program record on the 3-meter board. Louisville had another top-25 matchup earlier this season when the Cardinal women fell to the Tennessee as the men dropped a decision against the Volunteers. The Cardinals opened the 2019-20 campaign with a win over Xavier and the women posted an upset victory at the SMU Classic in October.
Â
History was made last season for the Cardinals as they became the first ACC program in history to have both its men's and women's teams finish among the top-five in the team standings at the NCAA Championships in the same year. The women's team recorded their highest finish in program history with a fourth-place showing at NCAAs while the men's team finished a program-high fifth place. The Cardinal men were the team runners-up at the ACC Championships and the women secured third place.
Â
Scouting the Hoosiers
Â
The fourth-ranked Hoosier men started their season with a 4-0 record after defeating Kentucky, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Iowa. They placed second at the Tennessee Invitational and are coming off a defeat versus Michigan and a win against Purdue. Mohamed Samy paces the Hoosiers in multiple events while Zane Backes has consistently been their top performer in the 100 breaststroke, as has Mikey Calvillo in distance freestyle and Cole VanDevender on the boards.
Â
The women of 21st-ranked Indiana took down Notre Dame but fell to Kentucky in their season-opener, finished fourth at the Tennessee Invitational, lost to Michigan, and posted a dual meet victory against Purdue so far this season. Noelle Peplowski and Emily Weiss lead the Hoosiers in breaststroke while Cassy Hernberg does the same in distance freestyle. Cora Dupre gives Indiana additional freestyle depth as Zain Smith tops both boards.
Â
Indiana is coming off their second-straight third-place finish at the men's 2019 NCAA Championships after securing their third-consecutive Big Ten title. The Hoosier women captured their sixth Big Ten Championship crown in program history before going on to finish ninth at NCAAs.
Â
