
Four Cardinals Hold Top Seeds after Day 1 Prelims at Purdue Invitational

No. 9/12 Cardinals send 30 back to finals tonight
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 9/12 University of Louisville men's and women's swim team got off to a fast start during prelims of the first day of the Purdue Invitational.
Thirty Cardinals will be back racing at finals, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

Sophie Cattermole is the top seed in the women's 500 freestyle after leading the way with a time of 4:45.13. Arina Openysheva (4:48.24), Maria Sumida (4:48.47), and Alena Kraus (4:50.73) hold seeds 2-4 to round out the A-final as Maddie Luther (4:55.26) and Maggie Jahns (4:56.65) will compete in the B-final.

Ilia Sibirtsev holds the top seed in the men's 500 freestyle with a time of 4:23.00, followed closely by Hayden Curley (4:23.15) and Jarrett Jones (4:23.81). Colton Paulson (4:26.45) and T.C. Smith (4:27.14) will also compete tonight in the championship heat and Sam Steele (4:28.49) will race in the B-final.

Six more Cardinals will get a second swim in the women's 200 individual medley led by top-seed Grace Oglesby (1:59.09). Diana Dunn (2:00.17), Mariia Astashkina (2:01.12), and Abby Hay (2:01.33) will race in the championship final while Carley Lowe (2:01.87) and Sumida (2:02.98) will compete in the consolation heat.

Daniel Sos (1:46.03) is seeded second in the men's 200 individual medley with Evgenii Somov (1:46.73) right behind him for the third seed. Chase Sellers (1:49.49) completes the A-final and Purdue's Trent Pellini is the event's top seed in 1:44.79.

All six Cardinals qualified for the women's 50 freestyle A-final, led by Casey Fanz (22.21) who will swim in the middle lane. Lainey Visscher (22.50), Christiana Regenauer (22.56), Openysheva (22.89), Nastja Govejsek (22.89), and Avery Braunecker (23.15) round out the fastest eight.

Tanner Cummings leads the Cardinals in the men's 50 freestyle as the second seed behind top qualifier Ryan Hrosik (19.51) of Purdue. Michael Eastman (19.77) and Mihalis Deliyiannis (19.90) will also join Cummings in the A-final while Haridi Sameh (20.00) and Caleb Duncan (20.24) will compete in the B-final.
