Cards take on Tar Heels in ACC matchup
The No. 12/14 University of Louisville swimming and diving teams will be back in action this weekend in their first ACC meet of the season as they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on the No. 5/12 Tar Heels inside Koury Natatorium.
The two-day dual meet will begin on Friday at 3 p.m. before finishing up on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The meet will be televised on GoHeelsTV and live stats will be available on GoHeels.com.
The Cardinal women improved to 3-0 after an impressive performance against No. 10 Tennessee in their previous meet with a 163-135 victory over the Volunteers. The men tied the Volunteers at 150 last weekend. Louisville posted 15 NCAA B-cuts and had eight multiple winners in the meet against the Volunteers.
The women, who are ranked No. 8 in the nation, were led by freshman Mallory Comerford's three wins in the 200, 500, and 1000 freestyle events over Tennessee. Defending National Champion Kelsi Worrell added victories in the 100 free, 100 fly, and contributed to the 200 medley relay victory. Another freshman, Rachel Bradford-Feldman, was triumphant in the 200 breast and the 200-IM.Â
Kelsi Worrell leads the nation with the best times in the 50 free (22.20) and the 100 fly (51.51) while standing third in the 100 free (48.60) this season. Freshman Mallory Comerford holds the best time in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.19 and Andrea Kneppers holds the best time in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.69. Andrea Cottrell holds the best times in the nation in both breaststroke events, with a time of 59.58 in the 100 breast and 2:08.53 in the 200 breast. Freshman Rachel Bradford-Feldman holds the best time in the 400 IM (4:00.45).
The men, who are ranked No. 14 in the nation, were led by Trevor Carroll continued his strong start with victories in the 50 and 200 freestyle events as well as contributing to the 400 free relay victory against Tennessee. Pedro Coutinho won the 100 fly and helped the 400 free relay team hit the wall first to earn a tie over the Volunteers.
Nolan Tesone holds the 7th best time in the nation with a time of 3:52.62 in the 400 IM. Grigory Tarasevich holds the 8th best time in the nation in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:45.03 and is 11th in the nation in the 100 backstroke with a time of 47.81. Carlos Claverie's time of 1:59.53 in the 200 breaststroke is 12th in the nation. In the 200 backstroke, Aaron Greene's time of 1:46.14 is the 14th best time in the nation.
The North Carolina No. 5 women's and No. 12 men's swimming and diving team are coming off victories over Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee last weekend in a four-way dual meet. The women defeated No. 10 Tennessee 184-116, No. 11 Indiana 180-120 and Kentucky 218-82. The men beat No. 9 Indiana 152-146, No. 11 Tennessee 166-134, and downing Kentucky 236-64.
The women, who are 3-1 on the season, picked up victories in nine of the 16 events. Junior Helen Moffitt captured three individual wins as she won the 100 back (53.48), 200 back (1:55.94) and the 100 fly (52.85). Senior Ally Hardesty captured a pair of individual events as she won the 100 free in 49.24 and the 200 free in 1:47.06. The Tar Heels used wins from senior Emma Nunn in the 1000 free, sophomore Caroline Baldwin in the 50 freestyle and sophomore diver Elissa Dawson picked up a victory in the three-meter diving.
Moffitt holds the third best time in the nation in the 100 back (52.77) and the fifth best time in the 200 back (1:55.53). Hardesty's time of 49.24 in the 100 free is sixth in the nation and her time of 1:47.06 in the 200 free is seventh in the nation. Baldwin's time of 22.65 in the 50 free is 10th in the nation.
The men, who are also 3-1 on the season, only picked up two individual wins in the four-way dual meet but benefitted from nine second place finishes. Senior Ben Colley won the 200 fly in 1:45.20 while senior Sam Lewis won the 100 fly in 47.20. Senior Nic Graesser picked up second place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke while junior diver Jack Nyquist also picked up runner up finishes in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
On the season, sophomore Henry Campbell's time of 4:23.22 in the 500 free is fifth in the nation. Graesser's time of 48.04 in the 100 back is tied for 14th in the nation. Lewis finished in 47.20 in the 100 fly and stands third best in the nation. Colley's time of 1:45.20 in the 200 fly is fifth in the nation.Â
