LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Here is the final Louisville baseball summer update with highlights on the Cardinals' 21 players competing during the summer.
Louisville's 21 underclassmen were assigned to four different wooden bat leagues this summer as well as the USA Collegiate National Team. With the completion of the collegiate summer season, players are returning to campus this week for the fall semester to resume the Cardinals' preparation for the 2015 college baseball season.
The Cardinals ranked third overall with eight players assigned to the prestigious Cape Cod League trailing only LSU (10) and Arizona (nine). Individually, righty Kyle Funkhouser led the USA Collegiate National Team with 36 strikeouts, while Blake Tiberi, Colin Lyman, Nick Solak and Robert Strader had strong seasons for Vermont in the New England League. USA Collegiate National Team
- In six appearances and five starts for Team USA this summer, junior righthanded pitcher Kyle Funkhouser was 1-2 with a 1.27 ERA (four earned runs in 28.1 innings) and a team-high 36 strikeouts while allowing just eight walks and 15 hits. Following the team's summer tour, Funkhouser was chosen as the USA Collegiate National Team's top professional prospect by Jim Callis of MLB.com. Cape Cod League
- In seven appearances and five starts this summer for the Wareham Gatemen, sophomore lefthander Drew Harrington had a 1-2 record with a 1.71 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 21.0 innings pitched.
- Sophomore righty pitcher Zack Burdi had 12 relief appearances this summer for the Chatham Anglers going 1-1 with a save, a 3.50 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 18.0 innings.
- Sophomore lefty pitcher Josh Rogers was 2-2 on the summer for the Bourne Braves with a 4.05 ERA in six starts and 26.2 innings in the Cape Cod League.
- In 11 relief appearances this summer for the Bourne Braves, sophomore righty Jake Sparger was 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA and eight strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched.
New England League
- In 38 regular season games for the Vermont Mountaineers, redshirts freshman infielder Blake Tiberi hit .372 with two home runs, seven doubles, one triple, 22 runs scored, 13 RBI and 16 walks. Tiberi was also a starter for the victorious North squad in the 2014 NECBL All-Star Game.
- Playing in 23 regular season games for Vermont, sophomore outfielder Colin Lyman hit .379 with 14 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.
- In 28 total games this summer for Vermont, sophomore infielder Nick Solak finished with a .299 average, 20 runs scored and 10 RBI.
- Sophomore lefty pitcher Robert Strader had a 2.07 ERA to go with a 1-2 record and one save in seven relief outings and 13.0 innings pitched this summer for Vermont.
- In 10 relief outings this summer for the North Adams SteepleCats, righty pitcher Jonah Philley had a 1.65 ERA to go with one save, a 1-2 record and 10 strikeouts in 16.1 innings.
Coastal Plain League
- In 22 games for the High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms, outfielder Logan Taylor led the team with a .425 average along with 21 runs scored, 11 walks, 11 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
