Danilowicz Shines as Cards Claim First Victory
February 15, 2026 | Baseball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Early offense and a stellar pitching performance lifted the University of Louisville baseball team to a 9-1 victory over Michigan State on Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Making the first start of his collegiate career, Wyatt Danilowicz was outstanding on Sunday. The southpaw retired the first eight batters he faced, including striking out the side in the second.
Meanwhile, the Louisville (1-2) offense immediately went to work. Alex Alicea and Lucas Moore reached to open the first and scored on RBIs from Ben Slanker and Kade Elam, respectively. Tague Davis then drove in Slanker with a groundball to give the Cards a 3-0 lead after one.
The Cardinals then pushed two more across in the second on a wild pitch and RBI single from Moore.
The five runs would be more than enough for Danilowicz. The lefty allowed just three baserunners over a career-high six innings, striking out nine for his first career victory.
Louisville kept tacking on runs in the middle innings. Griffin Crain singled home Kade Elam in the fifth before Moore tallied his second run-scoring knock in the sixth. Alicea then drove home a pair in the seventh to make it a 9-0 game.
Brandon Shannon tossed a scoreless inning in his collegiate debut, while Aaron England recorded the final five outs in the win.
Alicea and Moore each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs at the top of the order to lead Louisville's offensive attack. Elam recorded the first multi-hit game of his career with a 2-for-4 day.
Louisville will host Xavier on Tuesday to cap off a four-game homestand to open the 2026 season. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
