LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Here is this week's Louisville baseball summer update with highlights on the progress of the Cardinals' 20 players competing this summer.
The Cardinals have 19 returning underclassman and one incoming signee playing summer baseball in wooden bat leagues around the nation in 2011. Following the completion of the collegiate summer leagues, players will return to campus for the fall semester in mid-August to continue Louisville's preparation for the 2012 college baseball season.
Cape Cod League
- In his latest outing on July 1, RHP Justin Amlung (Wareham Gatemen) allowed only one hit with three strikeouts in 5.0 shutout innings to earn the victory against the Cotuit Kettleers. In four starts this summer, Amlung is 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched.
- RHP Matt Koch has allowed only one earned run in his last 10.1 innings of relief (eight appearances) for the Chatham Anglers. Overall, he is 1-0 with a 2.46 ERA and 10 strikeouts in nine relief appearances and 11.0 innings pitched this summer.
- RHP Dace Kime (Chatham Anglers) is 1-2 with a 3.47 ERA in seven appearances and four starts this summer. He has 19 strikeouts in 23.1 innings of work.
- RHP Chad Green (Bourne Braves) is 0-1 with a 5.84 ERA in six appearances and 12.1 innings pitched.
- RHP Andy Flett (Wareham Gatemen) is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA and five strikeouts in four relief appearances and 6.0 innings pitched.
New England League
- In his most recent outing on July 1, LHP Cody Ege (Vermont Mountaineers) allowed just one run on five hits with four strikeouts in a six-inning no-decision against the Mystic Schooners. Overall, he is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in five appearances (three starts) and 23.1 innings this summer.
- IF Alex Chittenden (Keene Swamp Bats) is hitting .344 with 13 runs scored, seven RBI and 11 walks in 18 games this summer. He also has seven multi-hit games, including a pair of three-hit performances.
- RHP Jeff Thompson (Keene Swamp Bats) is 1-2 in four starts with a 2.65 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched. He has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his four starts and has finished with at least five strikeouts in every outing.
Coastal Plain League
- RHP Travis Tingle (Thomasville HiToms) is 4-0 with six saves in 14 relief appearances this summer. He has 22 strikeouts in 21.1 innings of work and an ERA of 2.53.
- OF Cole Sturgeon has hit safely in eight of his last nine games for the Thomasville HiToms. Overall, he is hitting .317 with seven runs scored, four RBI and two doubles in 12 games this summer.
- OF Adam Engel (Florence RedWolves) is hitting .271 with one home run, 22 RBI, 23 runs scored and 19 stolen bases in 23 attempts in 30 games played.
Cal Ripken League
- On Tuesday, RHP Brandon Alphin (Baltimore Redbirds) allowed only one hit in 5.0 shutout innings to earn the win in the starting role against the Alexandria Aces. In six outings and four starts this summer, he is 4-0 with a 2.78 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 22.2 innings pitched.
- RHP Curtis McCombs (Baltimore Redbirds) is 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched and six appearances this summer.
Great Lakes League
- C Kyle Gibson has hit safely in six straight games and 10 of his last 11 for the Lexington Hustlers. Overall, he is hitting .342 with six RBI, three doubles, three runs scored and five walks in 12 regular season games this summer.
- In three starts this summer, RHP Mike Nastold (Cincinnati Steam) is 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched.
Northwoods League
- 1B Zak Wasserman (Mankato MoonDogs) has five hits, three RBI and two runs scored in his last three games. Overall, he is hitting .282 with 13 runs scored and 10 RBI in 26 games this summer.
