BETHESDA, Md. - Justin Marks struck out a career-best 10 in eight innings, and Stewart Ijames drilled a two-out, two-run double in the seventh to give the University of Louisville a 4-3 win over Georgetown in the opening game of the weekend series.
The Cardinals (29-16, 11-8 BIG EAST), who have now won a season-best five straight and 10 of their last 12, took a 2-0 lead in the first.
John Dao doubled down the right field line and Ijames reached on an fielding error by Georgetown shortstop Tom Elliot. Justin McClanahan then doubled off the wall in left center, scoring Dao. An out later, Andrew Clark's sacrifice fly to center plated Ijames.
Georgetown (16-29, 5-17 BIG EAST) knotted the game on a two-run home run by Dan Capeless in the bottom of the second.
A two-out error by Dao allowed Chip Malt to score an unearned run from second, putting the Hoyas up 3-2 in the bottom of the third.
In the Cardinal half of the seventh, Tyler Mickits singled up the middle and was replaced by pinch runner Nate Holland. Drew Haynes laid a bunt single down the third base side, putting runners at the corners. An out later, Ijames drilled the first pitch into the alley for a clutch two-run double that put the Cards back on top by a score of 4-3.
Marks equalled a career-best with his eight innings of work, allowing three runs - two of which were earned, on five hits to improve his record to 5-1 on the season. He finished strong, retiring the last 10 batters he faced, logging 1-2-3 sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The sophomore also retired the side in order in the fourth.
Senior closer B.J. Rosenberg entered in the ninth, and after picking up a pair of strikeouts, Capeless singled, but pinch runner Rob Begin was pegged at second trying to steal by Cardinal catcher Jeff Arnold. Rosenberg notched his fifth save of the season.
GU starter Tim Adleman (3-7) was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits, fanning three in 6.2 innings. Three Hoya relievers worked the final 2.1 innings, allowing a hit and a walk, striking out one.
McClanahan and Mickits each had two hits for the Cards.
The same two teams meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for the second game of the series.
