BETHESDA, Md - Consecutive RBI singles by Jeff Arnold and Phil Wunderlich in the ninth gave the University of Louisville a 5-3 win over Georgetown Saturday, giving the Cards the first two games of the series.
Louisville has won a season-best six straight, seven of eight and 11 of their last 13.
After a two-out error allowed Justin McClanahan to reach base, the Cardinals (30-16, 12-8 BIG EAST) were able to take advantage with a three-spot in the top of the third.
Chris Dominguez drilled an RBI triple into the right field corner and scored on a single up the middle by Stewart Ijames. Arnold was hit by a pitch, and Wunderlich singled home the third run of the inning.
Cardinal starter Zack Pitts was brilliant through seven scoreless innings, scattering four hits and allowing just one runner to reach third. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
But the Hoyas (16-30, 5-18 BIG EAST) evened the game with a three-run eighth. Chip Malt hit a two-run home run, and catcher Matt Ianetta hit an RBI single to knot the game at three, setting up yet another Cardinal rally.
McClanahan singled to open the Cardinal ninth and was replaced by Dominguez on a fielder's choice.
A single by Ijames, his fourth hit of the game, put runners at the corners with one out for Arnold, who drilled an RBI single into left field, putting the Cards on top. Wunderlich's RBI single plated Ijames to provide an insurance run.
B.J. Rosenberg struck out the side in the ninth, allowing a harmless single to earn the win and improve his record to 5-3. He tossed 1.1 frames overall, giving up three hits, striking out four. Thomas Royse followed Pitts, giving up the three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
GU starter Michael Gaggioli gave up three unearned runs on seven hits and a walk, fanning six in six innings. Closer Daniel Kennedy (1-3) took the loss, giving up two runs on four hits in the ninth.
For Ijames it was his first career four-hit game, while Dominguez and Wunderlich each had a pair of knocks.
Pitts and Rosenberg continued to ascend the record books at UofL. Pitts is now tied for 9th in career starts (33), 10th in innings (219.1), 9th in strikeouts (178) and 7th in ERA (3.82). Rosenberg moves into 3rd in innings (295.2), tied for 3rd in wins (18) and became the 6th Cardinal pitcher with over 200 strikeouts, notching number 202.
The Cardinals will attempt to sweep the Hoyas on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
