LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville fell victim to a five-run seventh inning that lead the Indiana Hoosiers to a 6-5 win over the Cardinals Wednesday at Jim Patterson Stadium, as both teams won at their opponents yard.
The Cards defeated the Hoosiers 16-3 Tuesday afternoon in Bloomington.
"They (IU) did a phenomenal job of finding the holes and then we make the blunder in the seventh," said Head Coach Dan McDonnell.
"On our side, when you look at it, you get 12 hits and six stolen bases and you only score five runs, we just didn't do enough to win. I feel responsible as the head coach and I'm sure our kids feel sick right now."
The Cards (33-16) wasted leadoff singles in the first and second innings, but cashed in on one in the third. Boomer Whiting belted his second single of the game and moved to third on Logan Johnson's 22nd double of the season before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Burton to break the scoreless tie. A failed pickoff throw to third by starting pitcher Chris McCombs sent Johnson plate ward for a 2-0 lead.
IU's (17-29) Evan Crawford doubled to open the top of the fourth and eventually scored on a sac fly by John Fixler, to cut the lead to one.
Howes leadoff the fifth with his second base knock on the evening, Jorge Castillo walked, a double steal moved both runners up a station and the throw to third went down the left field line allowing Howes to score. Chris Dominguez then singled home Castillo for a 4-1 Cardinal lead.
Whiting singled and stole his third base of the game in the sixth and scored on an RBI single by Johnson for a 5-1 advantage.
Cardinal starter James Belanger gave up a run on two hits in five strong innings and Kyle Hollander worked an easy 1-2-3 sixth.
Dominguez (0-1) then took the hill to open the seventh. Andrew Means leadoff with a double and Fixler singled. An RBI single by Reid Briglia cut into the Cardinal lead and an error loaded the bases with nobody out. A pair of seeing-eye singles by Billy O'Connor and Sterling Mack trimmed the lead to 5-4 and chased Dominguez.
Gavin Logsdon got Tyler Cox looking with the bases full for the first out of the inning and induced a fly ball to right that Burton caught for the second out. As Chris Hervey scored from third on the sac fly, the throw from Burton went to third where O'Connor was going to be caught in a rundown, but the ball got away from Dominguez at third, allowing the winning run to score.
Dominguez allowed five runs, two of which were earned on five hits without recording an out and took the loss.
Logsdon fanned one in an inning of work, while Trystan Magnuson walked one and struck out two in two innings.
Louisville chased McCombs after four innings in which he gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three. Danny Rosenbaum struggled through an inning plus, giving up three runs - two earned, on four hits and walk, fanning one.
Eric Arnett (2-1) picked up the win with four shutout innings, scattering a hit and two walks while striking out one.
Johnson moved into a tie for third with his 22nd double of the season. Whiting and Castillo were both 3 for 3, scoring three runs between them. Whiting stole three more bases, extending his single season record to 60, which doubles the previous mark, and the career record to 99.
The Cards host Notre Dame for three BIG EAST games over the weekend beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at Noon in Jim Patterson Stadium. Admission is free.
