LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Danny Otero tossed his third complete game of the season as the USF Bulls took game one of the three game weekend series by a score of 10-4 over the University of Louisville Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The game marked the return of former Cardinal Head Coach Lelo Prado, who is in his first season in the same position with his hometown Bulls.
"They outplayed us, it's as simple as that," said Cardinal Head Coach Dan McDonnell.
"I was proud how we fought back to within two runs, but we just couldn't get over the hump. I am anxious to see how we bounce back tomorrow."
The Bulls (28-16, 10-9 BIG EAST) plated a pair of runs on a hit, a walk, a wild pitch and a pair of RBI groundouts by Dexter Butler and Addison Maruszak for a 2-0 lead.
Louisville got one back in the bottom of the first when Boomer Whiting scored from third on a wild pitch after reaching on a leadoff single.
USF scored single runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Joey Angelberger and fifth on Butler's RBI knock for a 4-1 lead. Ty Taborelli's sac fly to right and another RBI single by Butler in the top of the sixth made it 6-1 Bulls.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cards (28-13, 11-5 BIG EAST) got back into the game. Daniel Burton drew a leadoff walk and Isaiah Howes singled and an out later Chris Dominguez hammered a 1-1 curve ball off the batter's eye in straight away center field for his fifth home run of the season, cutting the lead to 6-4.
The Bulls made it 7-4 in the top of the seventh, and added three more in the ninth on four walks, two hit batters and an RBI single by Brandin Daniel.
Otero (7-5) scattered nine hits and three walks, striking out five and benefitting from three double plays behind him in the win.
Cardinal starter Zack Pitts (7-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out two in 5.3 innings. Andrew Salguiero allowed a run on a hit and two walks, striking out one in a third of an inning.
Gavin Logsdon was touched for three runs on a hit and a walk in 2.0 innings of work, while Kyle Thornton walked three in two-thirds of an inning.
Senior Chris Cates recorded the final out of the ninth in his first career appearance on the mound.
Whiting, Howes, Dominguez and Cates each had two hits for the Cards, who were outhit 13-9. The home run by Dominguez was the only extra-base hit of the game. Logan Johnson saw his season-long 14 game hit streak end. Whiting stole his 50th base on the season in the 5th and 89th in his career, one away from tying Curtis Watson's career record at U of L.
Butler drove in four runs for the Bulls in a 3 for 5 effort.
U of L now has back-to-back losses for just the fourth time on the season. They have not lost three straight.
The Cards and Bulls will meet Saturday at 4:00 p.m. for game two of the set with freshman Justin Marks taking the hill for the Cards against USF's Chris Delaney (8-0, 3.61 ERA). There will be a private reception for Dugout Club members prior to the game at 2:00 p.m.
