EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville struck for a four-run first and never relinquished the lead as they dropped the University of Louisville 11-5 Wednesday afternoon at Braun Stadium.
"We're going to have to play much better baseball than we did today if we want to accomplish the goals that we have set," said Head Coach Dan McDonnell.
After thundershowers delayed the start of the game by 25 minutes, Louisville (9-7) stumbled out of the gate as the Aces (11-7) took the early lead. RBI singles by Robbie Minor and Kirk Bacsu and bases-loaded walks to Troy Krider and Ryan Barrett chased Cardinal starter Skylar Meade (2-1) who lasted just two-thirds of an inning giving up the four runs on four hits and three walks while taking the loss.
UE made it 5-0 on Krider's sac fly to left in the third.
Louisville briefly made it a game in the top of the sixth. Justin McClanahan drew a leadoff walk, and after Chris Cates singled, Logan Johnson smoked his team-leading fifth home run of the season to right to trim the lead to 5-3, but the Aces stormed back for five in the bottom of the frame, punctuated by Kasey Wahl's three-run home run to left.
The Aces plated in unearned run in the seventh to make it 11-3.
Daniel Burton and pinch hitter Alec Lowrey hit back-to-back one out singles in the Cardinal eighth, and Chris Dominguez belted a two-run double off the base of the wall in center to drive in two for the final score of 11-5.
UE starter Ben Norton improved to 3-2, allowing three runs on nine hits and a walk, striking out three in seven innings. Tristan Facer was touched for two runs on three hits in an inning of work, striking out one. Mark Murray struck out the side in the ninth.
Louisville's Gavin Logsdon replaced Meade in the first and worked a season-long 2.1 IP, allowing a run on three hits, striking out one. Kyle Thornton gave up a pair of hits, striking out two in two innings of relief.
Kyle Hollander struggled through an inning, allowing five runs on five hits. Colby Wark surrendered an unearned run on a hit and two walks in an inning of work, while Trystan Magnuson struck out the side on 10 pitches for the Cardinals in the eighth.
Cates extended his hit streak to a season-long 11 games, joining Burton, Dominguez and Howes with two hits apiece.
The Cards will host Xavier for a three-game series this weekend at Jim Patterson Stadium, beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET in the final weekend of non-conference play. Admission is free.
