LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trystan Magnuson worked six innings of two-hit baseball, equaling a career-high with six strikeouts in leading the University of Louisville to a 7-1 win over Murray State Wednesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
With two out in the first, Murray State's (13-33) Tyler Pittman hit a comebacker to Magnuson that was mishandled by the Cardinal starter. Jason Payton then doubled into the right field corner to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead on an unearned run.
The Cardinals plated three unearned runs of their own in the bottom of the third on just one hit and two Murray errors. Isaiah Howes and Daniel Burton reached on consecutive infield miscues and were moved up on a perfect sac bunt by Alec Lowrey.
Nick Haley's RBI groundout scored Howes and tied the game at one. Chris Cates then doubled to left to score Burton and two wild pitches later Cates scored for a 3-1 U of L (19-27) lead.
In the sixth, Pete Rodriguez belted a 1-1 pitch onto the berm in left for his second home run of the season, padding the Cardinal advantage to 4-1.
Lowery singled to open the seventh and moved to third on a double down the left field line by Haley. Cates walked to load the bases, before a wild pitch scored Lowrey from third. An out later Derrick Alfonso's sac fly to center plated Haley, and Jorge Castillo's third single of the game scored Cates for the 7-1 margin.
Magnuson improves to 4-2, allowing an unearned run on the two hits and a walk. Mike Lynn gave up a hit in two scoreless innings and Griffin Bailey hit a batter before a double play ground ball and strike out ended the ballgame.
Cates doubled twice, giving him seven two-baggers in his last five games. Castillo and Rodriguez each had three hit games for the Cards.
The Cardinals will hit the road for the final time this regular season when they travel to South Bend, Indiana to face the 8th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET.
Louisville will then play the final seven games of the regular season in Patterson Stadium.
