LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A wild pitch scored Cortese Armstrong from third in the top of the 10th, giving Western Kentucky a 4-3 win over the University of Louisville Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (17-24) right fielder Pete Rodriguez lead off the second with a single through the right side, and an out later Daniel Burton Walked. Alec Lowrey's RBI single scored Rodriguez for a 1-0 Cardinal lead.
Kyle Carden then grounded in what looked to be an inning-ending double play, but the relay to first by WKU shortstop Dennis Winn was wide of the bag, allowing Burton to score from second and advancing Carden to second base. A pair of wild pitches then pushed Carden across for the 3-0 advantage.
In the Hilltopper (18-18) half of the fourth inning, Winn's two-run single cut the Cardinal lead to a single run, and Eric Scriven, Andrew Nickerson and Matt Ransdell's consecutive singles to open the fifth tied the game at three.
Armstrong doubled over the head of U of L left fielder Isaiah Howes with one out in the 10th, and a groundout to the right side of the infield moved Armstrong to third to set up the winning run.
The last of six Western pitchers, Adam Balcom, was the most effective and the winner, improving to 1-0 on the year. He gave up a walk and hit a batter in three otherwise perfect innings.
Griffin Bailey (1-2), the third U of L pitcher on the evening, took the loss allowing a run on two hits and a walk in two innings.
Zack Pitts started for the Cards and was perfect through three, but stumbled in the fourth and fifth, surrendering three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four in 4.1 innings.
David Torcise followed with 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out three, allowing a hit and a walk. Gavin Logsdon followed Bailey and walked the only batter he faced, while Mike Lynn induced a groundout in a third of an inning.
After spending three straight weekends on the road, the Cardinals will stay at Patterson Stadium for a three-game series against rival Cincinnati beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET. Admission is free.
