LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Cincinnati freshman Steve Blevins fired a complete-game shutout to lead the Bearcats to a 2-0 win over the University of Louisville in the opening game of their weekend series Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Bearcats (26-15, 9-7 BIG EAST) put a run on the board in the top of the first, on Jack Nelson's RBI double to the gap in left that scored LaFringe Hayes.
In the top of the third, Logan Parker drew a one-out walk, moved to third on a single by Nelson and scored on a wild pitch for the 2-0 UC lead.
U of L (17-25, 8-8 BIG EAST) managed just five hits on the evening, lead by Chris Cates' two doubles, but outside of an error that loaded the bases in the sixth with two out, no other Cardinal reached third base.
Blevins improves to 8-3 on the season, walking three and striking out four.
Cardinal starter B.J. Rosenberg (5-5) pitched well, but was tagged with the loss, scattering seven hits and two walks over seven innings, allowing both runs and striking out two.
David Torcise retired the final six in order to close the game for U of L.
Logan Johnson had nine assists at second base, one off the school record of 10 set by Tommy Barnes in 1993. Johnson was also hit by a pitch in the first, the 16th time this season, equalling J.T. LaFountain's school record which was set in 2003.
Johnson has been plunked 33 times in his career, tying him with Dave Williams Jr. ('00-03) and Ryan McKinnon (02-05) for second on the all-time list, one behind LaFountain's school record.
Rosenberg is now fifth in career innings pitched, tossing 239.1 career frames, while his 39 starts in fourth in Cardinal history.
With heavy rains in the forecast Sunday, the teams have elected to complete the weekend series by playing a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium. Admission is free.
