LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kentucky jumped out to a 3-0 lead that the University of Louisville offense was unable to overcome as the 21st-ranked Wildcats topped the Cardinals 3-1 Wednesday night to sweep the season series. A near capacity crowd of 2,341 packed Jim Patterson Stadium, second only to the opening night crowd of 3,213 on April 15, 2005.
The Wildcats (27-10) took a 2-0 lead in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles by John Shelby and Michael Bertram.
Collin Cowgill's sac fly to left plated Ryan Wilkes, who had drawn a leadoff walk to extend the UK advantage to 3-0 in the top of the fourth.
The Cards (16-21) responded in the bottom of the fourth when Logan Johnson lead off with a single to left, and eventually scored on an RBI double to the gap in left by Daniel Burton. The Cards proceeded to load the bases with one out later in the frame, but Pete Rodriguez went down swinging and Alec Lowrey took a called third strike to end the inning.
UK reliever Matt Robinson (3-1) picked up the win with five strong scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out four. The only blemish was a pinch single by Isaiah Howes with two away in the seventh.
U of L starter Zack Pitts (1-1) took the loss, giving up all three runs on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. Cardinal pitchers struck out a season-high 13 on the evening.
David Torcise worked 2.2 innings out of the pen, allowing a hit and a walk while fanning three. Andrew Salgueiro walked two and struck out two in 1.1 innings of work, while Gavin Logsdon struck out the only batter he faced.
Brian Halford tossed a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two.
The Cards head to Morgantown, West Virginia on Thursday for a three game BIG EAST weekend against the Mountaineers beginning Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
