LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville starter Trystan Magnuson twirled six scoreless innings of two-hit ball to help the Cards to a 13-0 shellacking of Eastern Michigan Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Magnuson (2-1) now has pitched 13.0 consecutive scoreless innings, leading the Cardinals to shutout victories in his last two starts.
The Cardinals (3-8) put a four-spot on the board in an unorthodox first inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Boomer Whiting drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Cates. After a walk to Nick Haley, Whiting scored and Haley moved to second on a wild pitch.
Daniel Burton then walked and another wild pitch sent the runners over to second and third. EMU starter Kevin Wammes (0-2) was chased after setting a 2-0 count to Jorge Castillo.
Eagles (4-6) reliever Bobby Henderson completed a four-pitch walk to Castillo, loading the bases before a third wild pitch made it 2-0 Cards without the benefit of a hit.
Logan Johnson was hit by a pitch to again load the bases and Derrick Alfonso and Casey Albanese drilled back-to-back RBI singles to cap the inning.
In the Cardinal second, Cates doubled to the gap in left, moved to third on a sac bunt by Haley and was plated on a sac fly by Castillo to make it 5-0 Cards.
Whiting singled to leadoff the Cardinal sixth, moved to second on a sac bunt by Cates and stole third, before scoring on a double by Haley for a 6-0 advantage.
The Eagles threatened to score in the fourth and seventh innings, the only two frames that saw an Eagles baserunner reach third. In the seventh, Albanese made a bare-handed scoop of a ball that ricocheted off of reliever Griffin Bailey's foot and pegged the runner at first preserving the shutout.
A seven-run eighth sealed the victory for U of L.
Albanese walked, and Whiting and Cates singled to load the bases. Haley rolled into a fielder's choice, but Eagle catcher Matt Moffett dropped the throw home and Albanese was ruled safe.
Burton reached on an error by second baseman Kyle Rhoad, driving in Whiting, and Castillo and Johnson each hit RBI singles to make it 10-0 Cards.
Isaiah Howes, who already three singles on the day, doubled home two more, giving him his third career three-hit game and the Cards a 12-0 lead. An RBI groundout by Alfonso made it 13-0 U of L.
Magnuson walked three and fanned five in the win, facing just three over the minimum, and allowing just one runner to second base.
Bailey allowed two hits in two innings of relief and Brian Halford allowed a hit and struck out one in the ninth.
Wammes walked three and all three scored in his one-third of an inning.
Henderson gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out one in 5.1 innings of relief.
Tim Gray was touched for six runs, four of which were earned on four hits and two walks in an inning and a third.
Dan Puls surrendered an unearned run on two hits to go with a strikeout in one inning of work.
Cates was a perfect 3 for 3 with two sac bunts and two runs, adding seven assists in the field.
Whiting scored three times and added a pair of hits. With his two steals he is now alone in sixth place all-time with 39 thefts. Haley tied Mark Jurena in eighth with his 105th career walk. Johnson is now tied with Troy Hilpp in 8th place in Cardinals history, having been hit by a pitch 20 times in his career.
Howes, Alfonso and Castillo each drove in a pair for the Cards.
Every Cardinal starter either scored or drove in a run.
The final game of the series will take place on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at Patterson Stadium. Admission is free.
