
Hurricanes Too Much For Cards

MIAMI, Fla. - The 16th-ranked Miami Hurricanes jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over the University of Louisville, and the Cards couldn't recover, falling to the Canes 13-4 in the season opener for U of L.
The Hurricanes (6-3) scored two in the first when Cardinal starter B.J. Rosenberg (0-1) hit three batters to load the bases and Miami rightfielder Tommy Giles singled home a pair for a 2-0 lead.
Rosenberg took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits and a walk, while fanning one in 2.1 innings.
Miami batted around in the third, plating five more runs, keyed by a two-run home run off the bat of Hurricane DH John Jay.
Louisville (0-1) broke through in the top of the fourth when sophomore first baseman Jorge Castillo singled through the right side and junior DH Logan Johnson followed with a home run to left to cut the lead to 7-2.
Miami responded with three in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-clearing double by Walter Diaz to up the lead to 10-2.
An RBI fielder's choice by Johnson in the fifth cut it to 10-3, but Miami's Yonder Alonso's three-run home run in the bottom of the inning made it 13-3 Canes.
A bases-loaded walk to pinch hitter Pete Rodriguez in the eighth closed the scoring.
Hurricane starter Ricky Orta (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out five.
Jake Smith was touched for four runs on three hits and two walks in an inning and a third, and was followed by freshman Andrew Salgueiro, who gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings. Salgueiro struck out three.
Senior captain Griffin Bailey surrendered a run on a hit, while striking out one in two frames, and closer Brian Halford tossed a perfect eighth, striking out one.
Johnson drove in three of the Cardinal runs, while Castillo crossed the plate three times. Junior Isaiah Howes singled for the Cards, while senior Boomer Whiting and freshman Chris Dominguez each doubled on the afternoon.
Louisville will remain in Florida, travelling north to Boca Raton for a three-game weekend series at Florida Atlantic beginning Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Cardinal junior Trystan Magnuson is slated to face FAU's Mickey Storey (0-1, 4.35) in the opener. It is the first meeting between the two teams.
