
Cardinal Nine Splits Pair with #12 Georgia

LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville plated a run in the bottom of the ninth to edge 12th-ranked Georgia 7-6 in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday. The Bulldogs took the nightcap by a score of 14-3.
In game one Georgia (10-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout by Bobby Felmy.
Cardinal junior Boomer Whiting blasted his first career home run on a 3-2 pitch to knot the game at one in the bottom of the first inning. The last Cardinal home run to open a ballgame was by Nick Haley against Memphis on April 3rd of last season.
The Bulldogs plated two more runs in the third on back-to-back RBI singles by Joey Side and Josh Morris for a 3-1 UGA advantage.
A one-out solo home run by UGA's Brandon Lowe in the fourth extended the lead to 4-1 Georgia.
The Cards (7-5) got that run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double down the left field line by Isaiah Howes to make it 4-2.
Morris's RBI double in the fifth upped the UGA lead to 5-2, but the Cards trimmed the lead to a single run in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs.
Chris Cates walked to open the inning, and Whiting followed with a booming double off the wall in left, scoring Cates. Logan Johnson's RBI fielder's choice plated Whiting to set the score at 5-4, Dogs.
Felmy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth, extending the Georgia advantage to 6-4.
Louisville loaded the bases in the seventh on bunt singles by Whiting and J.T. LaFountain and a walk to Johnson. A walk to Daniel Burton plated a run, and Jorge Castillo followed with a sacrifice fly to center that tied the game at six.
In the bottom of the ninth, Burton singled with two away and Castillo followed with a single of his own, putting runners at first and second.
Howes worked the count to 2-2 before lacing a pitch down the right field line, scoring Burton and lifting the Cards to a 7-6 win.
It was the second time this season Howes has won a game in the ninth, and the third time in seven wins, the Cards have won in their last at bat. The last win over a ranked opponent for the Cards was a 5-2 win at #12 Tulane last season on April 9th.
Trystan Magnuson (1-0) retired all six batters he faced, striking out two in earning his first collegiate win.
Georgia closer Mitchell Boggs (1-1) took the loss allowing a run on four hits, fanning one in 1.2 innings.
B.J. Rosenberg started game one, and lasted four innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out one. Scott Jenkins followed and was touched for two runs on three hits and two walks in 1.2 frames. He struck out one.
Jon Harbridge allowed a hit and fanned two in 1.1 innings of relief.
Whiting was 3 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Howes was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI.
In game two, Georgia jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, chasing Cardinal starter Skylar Meade.
Whiting singled to open the bottom of the first and scored on an RBI single by Johnson, making it 4-1.
The Bulldogs piled on five more runs in the second for a 9-1 lead.
Haley's triple in the third scored Whiting making it 9-2 UGA, but the Dogs plated five more in the fourth to put the Cards away.
An RBI groundout by Danny Plasencia in the seventh closed the book on the seven-inning game.
Meade (2-1) surrendered four runs on six hits in a third of an inning. Chris Lopez also gave up four runs, on three hits and a pair of walks in an inning and a third. Freshman Zack Pitts was victimized for six runs on five hits and two walks in 1.1 frames.
Jason Keck made his season debut for the Cards, tossing three scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out one.
Blake Williams made his college debut in the seventh and struck out the side in order.
UGA starter Michael Hyle (1-0) earned the win, surrendering one earned run on four hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out five.
Redshirt freshman Jon Townsend entered the game as a defensive replacement in the fifth and proceeded to deliver two hits in two at-bats, the first of his young college career. Haley also had two hits in game two.
Morris was 5 for 6 with two home runs, a double and six RBI on the afternoon.
The teams meet for the rubber match Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Stadium.
